Am I insane to want to move to Jamaica?

I want to go back home after college so badly but I know my parents wants me to stay in the states. I hate it here and I miss Jamaica. They're always talking about how crime is getting worse and that Jamaica does not have a lot of opportunities (I'm trying to be an actuary, I don't know if Ja has many opportunities in that field). What are some convincing reasons I could use to let them know it's not crazy for me to move back home?

Dont let anyone shatter your dreams from moving back to Jamaica. Make sure to educate yourself to the fullest then move back to Jamaica. I know many successful people in Jamaica that would not want to move to the US even if you paid them a million dollars.
Make sure you pray about your decision, if its God will for you to move to Jamaica then nothing on this earth can stop you. Maybe you will be the one to make a difference in Jamaica especially with the issue on crime.

There is no place on earth that is safe that is why you need to be covered under the blood of Jesus at all times.

NO UR NOT! i'm in the states too going to college n i MISS HOME SO BADLY ...i plan on doin the same thing! i'm going back next yr summer for ATI!!

u know they always say...when that bridge comes you cross it, i guess since your still in school you dont have to be thinkin about that now,u can always visit in the meantime, EVERYWHERE U GO THERE ARE CRIMES...have you been watchin fox news lately? u jus have to be careful

1. Chances are, you will be an adult when you finish college. Its your decision, not theirs.

2. I would suggest that you get at least 1 1/2 - 3 years work experience in the USA before returning home. THAT is what will make your degree TRULY international in appearance and value. The degree by itself isnt worth that much.

3. By the time all that is done, it will be VERY clear to you what to do. Either you will STILL hate the USA having given it a proffesional try, or you will love it and prefer it (at least economically).

Once you have solidified your level of experience as an adult in this way, you are VERY well equipped to tell your parents that you want to work in Jamaica instead. There are few things as effective as saying "but mom & dad, i tried it...I did it... I didnt like it. It's time to move on."

Some parents will still battle with you a bit, some are even control freaks by nature! But at that stage there is very little else that can be said. It boils down to what YOU want to do with YOUR life and once have qualified yourself to make your own decisions, there isnt much to argue about.

If you want to make them REALLY happy? Get a good job in Jamaica BEFORE you leave the USA. This will mean sending in applications and making social contacts from VERY early. Facebook works!

If they are THAT type of parents, they will want to be able to tell thier friends "oh my daughter/son just came back and already they got a good job with XXXX. Isn't that great? She is doing SOOO well!"

They wont even remember that ITS STILL your life, but they might settle for those simple bragging rights.

EDIT:
Crime/Risk is everywhere. HOWEVER, it is a fact that there is more murder in Jamaica than there should be. The real implication of this is that you would have to configure your lifestyle in a way that is security conscious. The things you choose to do, the timing and the places you go to can ALL dramatically influence your risk level. (Of course you would already know this as an actuary!). The real question then, is are you willing to deal with the lifestyle compromise that living in Jamaica will entail?

Judging for the new luxury investments and returning residents moving back to Jamaica and foreigners moving into Jamaica you would be wise to keep your connections with home. The Government is on a "reduce the crime" campaign, but is it not true that crime is everywhere, even in the USA ? I am shocked at the amount of murders that are happening in the USA lately. There is no logical reason to disconnect from beautiful Jamaica as it is your birthplace and always will be. You want tobe an actuary, there are plenty of Insurance firms that need your services in Jamaica. Plenty of opportunities are there, if you look in the right places and ask the right people.

This is for Bob D, I take offence at being labled "stupid" crime IS everywhere you go and
it cannot and should not be making it dificult for a person to make life decisions especially with their own country of birth mate. Chicago with a 2.8 million POP has had 443 murders this year, do the maths Pal. Not much better than "Island Jamaica" is it ?

Bob D
You need to do what your heart tells you, or you'll have regrets all your life ! Your advantage is that your young, so even if you make the wrong decision, you can always do it over.....plus you have roots in both places, so you'll have enough security to go back to either place if you choose.

Having said that, what your parents say is true. Jamaica has opportunities, but you need to be at the right place at the right time, and THATS not easy....why you think there are more Jamaicans OFF the island than there is IN JAMAICA ?? If you want to grow in your field, JA is not the place !

The ( stupid ) argument about crime being everywhere does NOT hold water. There are about 80-100 murders in JA every month !! With a population of just under 3 million, that's the size of a major city in the states.....if there was EVER 100 murders in one month in a city that size in the states, the government would send in federal troops ! The worst city ( for crime ) in the states, New York, does NOT have 100 murders a month. That statistic about JA can not be ignored and its not changing ! Didn't even mention rapes, robberies, burglaries, and assaults.

I suggest after you graduate, you go to JA and live there for a few months. You can compare the quality of living alot better, and put feelers out for your chosen occupation. I know ppl in JA that would never want to live in the states & are perfectly happy, but theres a alot of ppl that want more for themselves than the limited pay and limited advancement that companies in JA has to offer.

By the way, what is it about the states you hate so much ?

You are not insane at all. In some ways your parents right but like America and any other place, there are pros and cons.

you dont need to convince them. when you leave college its you life, you choice etc.

i advise you to work a bit over there and save some money ... then move back you could do alot out here. i dunno about opportunities for you job but with USA status u know they will just sop you up like a sponge

its up to you to choose where you wanna live your life. parent only have so much to say about that and no more. you parent cannot control you such that you live a unhappy life. do what you want.

parents are her to raise you as a child. not throught you whole life

Your parents are just trying to keep you safe. Jamaica has been having a lot of crime and there will always be a hurricane. They just want to keep you in a safe place right now. You can go one vacations.
