Americans living in Jamaica?

Are there any Americans living in Jamaica who would be willing to help me with my move? I need info about health care, schools, trasportation, part time work, TRN #, banking, etc. I will be staying in my parents house with my husband and 6 year old child.

You definitely need to tell in which part of Jamaica you´re moving. For your TRN, they will need you to fill a form, a copy of your passport and don´t remember what else, they will give you a piece of paper that you need to keep and come back to the office in about to months to get the official TRN number.

If you are not jamaican, the working part will be a little bit hard (working legally). You will need to go to Kingston to the Ministry of Labor to process the work permit. This includes some paperwork from the company you will be working for, from you (resume, copy of your documents, TRN, etc) and to pay 10,000 JMD for each 3 months period you intent to work, for example if you are planning to work for six months it would be 20,000 JMD (almost 300 US), for a year 40,000 plus a 1,000 processing fee. (Today´s rate 68.93)

Health care... is not good, but if your moving to Kingston (God be with you), it´s not too bad. If your moving to MoBay (Montego Bay), it´s not too bad either... moving somewhere else.. pray.

Education is not good either.

Also, it is a good idea to contact the embassy of your country in Jamaica, they can help you with some information and give you tips.

Since your taking your kid, be very very careful with the water.

To open a bank account, the best bank is NCB (National Commercial Bank of Jamaica), you can open the account with your passport, but of course, they will need some references. ScotiaBank is there also, but it is even more difficult to open an account (if you don´t have one already with them in any country).

You can enter the island as a tourist and once you´re there get first hand information about all this.. is the best.

Don´t forget to go to Negril and Ocho Rios.

I suggest you go to the Consular General's office in your area and start there. To ask this question online may not be a good idea as you will get varying degrees of assumptions.

I would say plan on visiting the country for at least a month so you can connect with some people and get the informaiton first hand.

Here is a site that maybe helpful

Enjoy your return. I will be joining you soon

I lived there, to get a trn you need to be registered to vote, also you can go to hospitala in jamaica, the best one is St Josephs hospital or UWI hospital, there is another one that is in kingston called Jamaica Public Hospital but u do not want to go there. Transportation is everywhere you can take taxis, bus, vans everything goes everywhere in Jamaica. Banking I would say they have Scotiabank, NCB, JMMB,Bank of Jamaica and there is even a citibank in Jamaica.
for education, if your son is 6 I would say to take him to a prep school instead of primary school, just because it is a better environment and better education. I went to Stella Maris prep, it is kinda expensive but the education is top notch, they have ardenne prep, Hillel (very good), holy childhood prep, calabar prep. High schools are mostly all girl or all boy, I only know a few schools that are co-ed.

All in all I say go to the Jamaican embassy website and you can get further info. Good Luck you will have a good time.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I met a guy there who was American, his girlfriend was stripper

he seemed happy

health care:not much
schools:the kids wear uniforms and slide downhill on cardboard, no snow or sleds
part time work: you need a permit, I was considering staying as a teacher maybe, my passport said clearly no work permit
banking: somebody took the money
if your parents are Jmaican maybe it will work out ok

boy_jam_arch
They don,t have TRN in the US what they have is a Social Security #, you wont be able to obtain a social security number if you are on a visit, you will have to have legal papers to work, visiting Visa if not good for employment. The health care is ok
but you will need a social security number to obtain the benefit they offer, you can email me at boy_jam_arch@yahoo.com
