I completely understand your question. I too voted COP and though I completely respect and appreciate that we have the freedom to choose, I would like to know why the people who voted PNM did so.

I definitely did not want the UNC, I don't understand how people can blindly follow Panday or Jack Warner. Especially after the tricks with the 'fake' visit with Mandela and so many questions about Jacks and Pandays honesty. Last night when he made the comment about, if you voted for COP and your family is murdered or raped etc., look at yourself in the mirror and know that you caused it. Well, that should clearly tell you what kind of person he is. I don't like Manning, but at least he talked about the fact that we all have to live together etc.

What bothers me with the PNM, is the fact that they have sooo much money at their disposal now, I am not sure if they are spending it wisely. The sort of wealth that the country has doesn't seem to be spreading around. If you go into the country areas, people are still bathing by standpipe, the roads are a wreck, it is like a 'fourth' world country. Why is the money not reaching these people? Yet some of these people still voted for them. We should have a fairly good 'basic' standard of living for everyone, not just some.

I worry about what will happen to us as a country when the oil and gas runs out and all these foriegn companies and investers pull out of Trinidad. We cannot make it on tourism like the other islands. And let's face it, think honestly, how many tourists really come to Trinidad for Carnival? Try to eliminate the ones who used to live here and migrated, friends and family of Trinidadians. The numbers cannot compare to the plane loads of tourists who go to the other islands year round. So that option is out for us.

On the issue of smelters. How can you not care what the population thinks? You don't want one smelter, well, take three then!

The only countries that have smelters are countries where they have so much energy reserves, they don't know what to do with it. Apparently it takes a lot of energy to run one. That is why the other countries don't want it in their country. They don't want to use up their own energy reserves.
But do we? Who is going to help us when our energy reserves run out?

When Mr. Manning talked of 'assisting' Nigeria with 'knowledge' about oil etc. What is he talking about? We cannot even get our oil out on our own. Thus all these foreign companies BP, BG etc. And all the foreign ex pats that come down to work for them.

Yes, they provided GATE. But, it is a drop in the bucket compared to the kind of money that flows through this country. It just doesn't seem to be getting to everyone.

I have ranted enough. I guess I just have to accept that our population is happy with things the way they are.

COP seemed to me to present candidates that were, young, intelligent, enthusiastic people. Who so far, were not tarnished by any scandals.
No one had been arrested and got off on a technicality. No one was caught using materials from the building of a hospital for their own personal use. No one had been caught misusing the government credit card for personal items . No one had a BBC reporter write an book about your corruption. They haven't used the excuse that your wife handled the finances, so you didn't know how it is that your children were being funded to be in school in England.
I mean it never occurred to you to say " Honey, how is it that we can afford an apartment in London, and English school fees? Isn't that rather expensive?"

Maybe COP needed more of those candidates. Clearly by the votes, this is what the population wants.

Sad.

Well for starters.

The government has attracted a total of US$8 billion in investment in the energy sector, an average 8 per cent growth in Gross Domestic Product over his 6 years in office, the reduction of unemployment to 6 per cent and the expenditure of billions of dollars on health and education.

The PNM government has had total revenues of TT$200 billion over the last six years

In government the PNM has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on work training programmes and educational opportunities for young people; the government now pays for tertiary level education at all Caribbean universities.

Kidnapping for ransom has been held under control over the last year.

The Island is still standing a lot of people are returning home to settle down in our beautiful Island, so the PNM must be doing something right.

POWER TO THE PNM
POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Hi Casey!

I voted PNM because I saw no other viable option.

They were not too bad as people speculate, I have been able to access education free with Gate and I am going to pursue my degree through Gate. Housing (dat is if yuh get one) is economical and affordable to many with easier mortgage terms and incentives.

I do find that they need to drastically improve in the cost of Food and Utilites. They also need to increase the various grants - pension, welfare, assistance, etc. to be on par with the cost of living.

COP is fruitful as well - they fought well, not nasty politics and was very good in securing some votes - I would have liked them to become the Oppositon. Next five years we will see!

UNC A - thank god they did not win because the country will have seen a huge shutdown in construction and infrastructure development. Jack Warner is a smart man - he lied about Mandela trip, he hasn't paid the Soca Warriors properly as yet and he assualted a reporter when he accused him on something. Basdeo Panday has a record and has impending matters before the court. Ramesh has caused the UNC its demise and joined bcak five years later! Pity we forget the past, but this group cannot get my vote! Imagine Jack Warner as Minister of Finance!

**************************************...
I did not give COP a chance because I knew they were not entirely ready. Some of the persons in COP are either hurt of disatisfied with PNM or UNC so they were in it to get back. I think COP will become stronger and wiser in the years to come. They need to be active throughout as well.

wait nah, wait Trini like it on self destruct mode. We need this 5 years for the revolution of the mind to start.
As it is people still with their hands out begging for something, anything. Oil money flowing again, you don't have to be creative to run this country with all that money.
Let's see what they will do when oil prices drop to $10 a barrel, cause Bush can't keep feeding that war machine too long with the US $ losing ground.
Or maybe Bozo might just start to sell our oil for Euros ....if he has the balls to do it and not pander to "world power"
So my friend fear not for what is too be will be, sad thing is the poor who supported them will feel the full force of what is to come.

Why i voted PNM?
Free Education - from Nursery to Tertiery, MUST, CDAP, and all the other training program that were introduced to assist young people are my major motivators.

Every one has a problem with the level of crime in the country, and I have asked time and time again - what exactly do you expect the Government to do about crime? Do you see Manning, Panday, Jack, Kamla, Winston or any one of them walking about with guns and kidnapping the citizens?

If we as parents cannot control our children, how do we expect Teachers, politicians and others to control them? Discipline begins at home and fixing crime begins at home.... parents need to stop defending their children when they know that they are doing wrong and start correcting them.

Why i didnt vote for UNC and COP?

UNC - i cannot in my right mind support a jail bird, 2. Oma not telling me who is she investment banker. (If I deposit 1 Mil in the bank there aint no way that in a few years it going to reach 10 mil, so i need to get her investment banker to do my banking.) 3. during the election campaign all i was hearing from them is Vote out Manning, and dont split your votes by voting COP.

COP - Winston started out real good when he left the UNC, and i was all for him, and then all you were hearing from COP was Vote out Manning, and UNC cannot win so vote COP. and on top of that, he find that the PNM government was spending too much money on the citizens - he going and stop the CEPEP program, and give the White house for a home for battered women because the Manning waste money on that house...i always wondered if they thought that Manning would takeup the house, carry it Sando and live in it there if he didnt win the elections. and then they wanted to cut down on the number of training / retraining programs.

Yes, in the last six years may things went wrong, but in the last six years, many things also went right, and i vote so that they will continue to go right!

Julien, you really want to start on health care in this country? What have the doctors been doing to improve the way people are treated in this country except withhold their services for more money? Why is it that when ever a new piece of machinery is purchased for the hospital, all of a sudden parts start to go missing. Why is it that private nursing homes have sheets and pillow cased that are made in the Hospital sewing room? Why is it that a doctor cant find time to see you when you are in casualty or as an outpatient but can recommend that you visit the nursing home that he own or working in so that he can care for you there? Why is it that you can never get a doctor on call when you in the hospital even though they getting paid over $20,000 a month by the government and can have their own private practice.

PLEASE DO NOT GET ME STARTED!

I agree with u christy totally. People blind as a bat.. He is a dictator. People vote him cause u know why... Figure it out..

I'll be honest...I didn't vote. I have no faith in the government. But at the same time I am not blind to the political corruption that is going on right now.

Trinidad and Tobago is not a poor country. PNM, UNC and COP know this. I have seen Patrick Manning boldly bad spend the country's money for his own personal gain.

UNC for sure I didn't want in power again. COP seemed like the least corrupted party. But knowing my country and the breed of humans we're dealing with, I know even with my vote, PNM would have still win.

You talk about free Tertiary Education! I'm presently doing my degree in Business Management. Yes it's true that the Education is free. But the problems of getting a lecturer to teach the course is as a result of the government not paying the tutors. Do you know how many times I have to go to class and the tutor didn't come to teach? Why? They are all busy protesting for the money they worked hard for! Then when the student fails the course he/she has to now PAY from their pocket to do it over, because you wouldn't get your degree unless you passed all your courses.

Free Tertiary Education my foot!

I could go on and on about the things Manning didn't do for our country. I believe he's spending the country's money badly.

Another five years on the battle field for citizens!
