Any advice on renting a villa in Jamaica for 12/29-1/5?

am planning a trip to Jamaica with a group of late 20/early 30 somethings for New Years week 12/29-1/5. Any tips on choosing a villa? I've contacted several villa owners directly after getting information from vrbo.com- and I have found several that look appealling. We are a bit late in the game to be planning this, but it seems there are still options. I just want to proceed with caution and make sure I am informed before selecting a villa. I can imagine that going this route is slightly less *insured* than going the hotel route, but it seems like a fun and economical way to travel with a large party. Any thoughts would be appreciated. THANK YOU!
Additional Details
We choose Jamaica because part of our party has parents residing currently near Discovery Bay. We were thinking we'd try to find a villa in Discover Bay or Ocho Rios to be close to Morgan's parents who are locals and have the inside scoop. Morgan is obviously familiar with Jamaica though I have never been there.

Half Moon villas are expensive but cool

I stayed in a villa in Jamaica a few year ago, it was near the town of Duncan right on the beach. I'm trying to remember the name of the little housing area...will let you know if I can remember. It was a lot of fun though, there were a total of 7 of us, the house had 4 bedrooms and came with a maid and a cook and driver but the price was really not that bad for everything.

The housing area had guards at the entrance gates, and if we left our driver was always with us so we felt very safe. Had our own stairs to the beach and it was near an outdoor restaurant/bar type place.

We have lots of beautiful villas around the country. Most of them are excellent.
You can take a look at this Jamaican site: http://www.my-island-jamaica.com/jamaica_villa_vacations.html

There is a recommendation on there as well.

FYI

Don't be scared of Jamaica. All the people who say "I heard you can't leave your resort cuz its so dangerous" either have never been there OR they've never even experienced the real Jamaica before.

Jamaica is a wonderful island - tons of great culture, music, food, and people.

Of course, anytime you're traveling in a poor country, you should use common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

My parents took us kids there 3x when I was little and I returned for my honeymoon as an adult 2 years ago. Can't wait to return for my 5th trip.

I've never stayed in a villa, although Negril has lots that look nice. I suggest spending some time on www.tripadvisor.com to read reviews from people that have stayed in villas in Jamaica. You can contact them directly. Also, there is a Jamaica forum on that same website. Its quite informative.

Beach House Villas got great reviews:

www.treasurebeach.net They have alot of villas to rent. Very nice area, safe and quite. Things are less expensive than Ochi or MoBay.

I've got no recommended locations but just advice. The longer you wait to choose a place, the more undesired it's going to be. You are already getting the left overs. If your plan is to party all day and night, you'd be better off at a resort as there is safety in numbers. If your plan is a nice relaxing week, by all means try the villa route. Check other websites also and compare. If no one in the group has been to Jamaica before I'd recommend the resort route and do your homework for next New Years while you are there this year.

Keep your expectations low so you aren't disappointed when you arrive. These villas are seldom as nice as they appear online and through descriptions. But I would go ahead and do it. You have much more freedom in regards to how much noise you make and you can cook your own meals.

I am planning a trip to Jamaica and talked to alot of people including some travel agents about it. They all told me if you go to Jamaica go to one of the resorts and don't leave the resort without a guide. I guess it can be dangerous especially at night. I wouldn't know though cause I've never been there.

bring tons of money, try to make it last

note the methods people use to rip you off, so you can not fall for them next time, also if and when you become broke, you will know what to do to survive

if you are meek and scared, just pay the $200 per day and stay at the villa

if you are more adventurous and can deal with hookers and street people, then pay like $24 a night instead , and use the other $76 per day for food and beer
