I also suggest that you book with Sandals for a nice, all-inclusive holiday. I stayed in Ocho Rios and was not impressed, however, there are a lot of things to do in and around Ocho Rios. If you stay at a Sandal's resort, you will literally not have to leave the entire time you are there and you can go to other Sandal's properties in the area with their shuttle - there are several Sandal's in the O.R. area.
Some suggestions of things to do - climb Dunn River Falls, horseback ride through a working plantation (my favorite), raft trip down a river - think of a flat wooden raft, gondolier, and a bottle of wine (or Red Stripe beer, if you prefer). There's also parasailing (do it with a reputable company recommended by the hotel and not just some guy who offers it on the beach - think safety), diving, snorkeling, tours of rum factories (free sampling), etc.
You'll be approached to buy drugs during your trip - it would be unusual if you weren't approached in Jamaica - and if you are approached simply say, "No, thank you". Believe it or not, the dealers are usually in cahoots with the police to trap tourists into buying drugs. The dealer turns them in and receives a reward, the cops confiscate the drugs, the dealer provides 1/2 of the reward to the cops, who give him back the drugs. At the very least you will pay a hefty fine ($1000+ for grass and more for others) or find yourself in a Jamaican jail (not a pretty prospect).
Contact a Travel Agent and have them put something together for you. I recommend an all-inclusive package vacation - Worry-Free Vacations or Funjet (Apple is a rip-off). Have the TA put it together for you to make sure all the details are handled. If you don't have a passport and are travelling in 2007, get one ASAP, |
