Depends if you want crowds or not. The Bahamas has the nicest water. Nassau is very crowded and feels like a large city. Harbour Island off Eleuthera has beautiful pink sand beaches and extremely friendly people, 5 star vacation at Pink Sands Hotel. Jamaica is crime ridden but beautiful. The West Indies (St Lucia, ST Vincent) are gorgeous but lots of poverty. British West Indies (Turks and Caicos) is very expensive but gorgeous. Mexican beaches are losing their reefs because of too many tourists and too much sun tan lotion. But Mexico is cheap. Belize is outstanding. Costa Rica is nice on the gulf side but is lousy on the pacific side. Black sand beaches are just another word for mud. Volcanic ash mixed with sand and it is like sitting on a pond in kansas. The out islands of the Bahamas are very nice and you can find lots of small hotels or houses to rent. Bahamas out islands are #1. |

Grenada is my favorite. St. Thomas is great. You can take ferry to St. John /Tortola from there. St. Maartin, Grand Cayman are great. Bahamas is my least favorite. |

I don't know which is the best in the whole Caribbean, it really depends on what you like. I've been to the Bahamas, Punta Cana, St Thomas, St John, and Jamaica. I loved Blue Lagoon Island (a side trip) when in the Bahamas. We stayed at Beaches hotel, all inclusive. Punta Cana is a very poor sad place but the hotel we stayed in was luxurious with an enormous pool and a great beach. St. Thomas/St John has by far the best beaches with the best snorkeling and our hotel, the Wyndham had the best food and entertainment. We went to Jamaica 7 yrs ago and will be returning in a few weeks but to a Sandals hotel. I love the Jamaican people and their music. Not crazy about Jamaican food but the hotels also serve American, Italian, Japanese etc so food isn't an issue. |

It is ideal. Close to the U.S. Has all of your creature comforts (soft beds, nice cars, internet service, electricity, indoor plumbing etc.) Convenience store that open 24 hours. Beautful beaches and people. |

No. I think that if you have never been out of the continental U.S. before, then the Bahamas are fine and dandy. They're beautiful and quite pleasant.
However, if you want to experience different cultures, then there are many other options. I enjoy any of the U.S. or British Virgin Islands. I also enjoyed the Riviera Maya of Mexico. Finally, I cannot recommend Punta Cana of Santo Domingo because I have not yet been, but I hear it has come a long way. It is next on my list! |

I like St. Johns the best because it was less visited, though I did enjoy the Bahamas.
