Go to Coki Beach on St Thomas. You will have the time of your life snorkeling. Also take a ferry over to St John and enjoy Trunk Bay where they have a snorkel trail.
I recommend taking a boat excursion to the BVI, where you stop at a few places to snorkel.
Check out these sites

The USVI are beautiful. Enjoy) |

Many great places to snorkel, hotel people, cab drivers, all can suggest places to go. Be sure to take the ferry to St. John and snorkel Trunk Bay. Take a tour with the drivers, they will be at the ferry dock. Generally, all drivers and workers are very friendly. Charter a sailboat for 1/2 day or full day, if funds permit, it is worth it. Take a tour to the British Islands. There are snorkel tour boats that will take you to several places for great snorkeling. Don't be afraid jump in and go. |

Sapphire beach! I went to 3 different beaches on St. Thomas while I was on my last cruise, and Sapphire beach has the most beautiful water, and AMAZING snorkling. The water at that beach actually isn't too great for swimming because of all the coral. There are even lots of sea turtles at that beach (not huge ones... but are very neat to see while snorkling).. and the water isn't TOO deep either. I highly recommend that beach. Magens Bay is not a good beach for snorkling.. all you'll see is white sand!.. You will have an amazing time.. Oh, and be sure to take a ride in one of their taxis, You'll see why when you get there! :-) |

Yes Great place. Go to Magans Bay and if you can get to Drakes seat in the mountain it is awsome view where he watched the ships come into the bay. Snorkle in St. John Caneel Bay...charter a boat w/ lunch and snorkle ashore to shop! Trunk Bay is nice too. Talk to people who live there and they will hook you up. |

All the beaches we have tried were great. Whats best is grab a cab and ask the driver, if you check at your hotel they may have somebody they would recommend. Our driver took us to an out of the way beach where we had to climb down a path to get to it. Best of all we were the only ones there for over 2 hours. We arranged a pickup time for our driver to return and he started honking his horn about 1/2 mile up the road. He then came down to help us back up the path with out things.
The shopping is great all around. St. Johns is pristine...you have to visit there. See the links below for St. Thomas info. We try to go every year and I keep links all the time.
good luck and have fun, St. Thomas is our favorite place to go.
check out www.doubloon.com they offer a snorkeling excursion for cruise ship passengers, don't know if they offer it for others.
if you look through the party pictures main page you will see a guy shoveling snow. that was me 2 weeks after an '05 cruise, I still hadn't cooled off. They take people to a island which is a bird sanctuary to dive in Turtle cove, it was a very fine experience.
There is a place called Coral World you would like, try the Atlantis Submarine, see the links. both |

I know you're not cruising, but since you're going to be in StT for a while, you might want to try different beaches for snorkeling. You can see what others have to say about that at CruiseCritic.com, "Boards", "Snorkeling & Scuba".
I would suggest at least one trip to St John. We did the Linde Point Trail in the National Park, down to Salomon Bay Beach and Honeymoon Bay Beach. Wonderful! It's an easy hike to basically "deserted" beaches - no facilities or "toys", etc, so you'd have to take your own equipment. You can end up hiking over to Caneel Bay, where you could have a nice lunch and get a cab back to Cruz Bay and the ferry. [Info at the NPS site or just try a search for Linde Point Trail.] |
