Have seen a fair bit of the island, from Pinar del Rio and Viñales thru Havana (a definite recommendation, clearly) to Santiago de Cuba in the east.
My fave place, though, is Campismo la Mula, 90 minutes west of Santiago. It's below El Turquino, Cuba's highest peak in the Sierra Maestra. The clear water of Rio la Mula runs into the sea there, so you can rinse off the salt surf in fresh water.
Very few tourists, but lots of young Cubans dancing late into the night. Your choice of motel room or cabin, with bedding changed every other day. And cheap! $20 (Cdn) a day covered my room, all my meals *and* all my beer. Great horse-riding up the river into the mountains. Stunning scenery, especially if you go up Turquino -- a long hard climb, but worth it. All in all, awesome. |

Havana:
Old havana, the Cathedral square, Castillos (the castles) de Morro, la real fuerza, etc, quinta avenida (fifth avenue), Marina Hemingway, the Capitol, Malecon, Calle 23, Primera (first avenue), Chinatown,and lots of restaurants like el Meson de la flota, el laurel, and clubs like Cabaret Tropicana, Parisien, la Sala Atril.
Varadero:
The BEACH you won't forget it, the delfinarium, Casa Dupont
Pinar del Rio:
Vinales(beautiful landscapes) and the ecoreserve Las terrazas |

there are many places to go in Cuba, depending on the experience you want to have. If you want to stay in the city Havana or have a more rural trip Cienfuegos or perhaps a beach vacation Varadero. I have left some links so you can see just what Cuba has to offer and where you may want to go. |

We stayed in Veradero, beaches resort, not bad. The markets are fun but Havana was amazing for the History buff. Artero was our guide and took us through the back streets safely. You see things you would not normally see by yourself and its safer with a guide who knows where he is going... |
