Anyone know of an island for sale? What are they going for these days?

I'm thinking of moving and starting my own civilization on an island far far away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

what? Oh no, no, no. You don't want to invest in an island....believe me. I've thought about it, thought about it again, almost convinced my husband to actually do it and then came to a wonderful realization.......it would be horrible.

Wait, let me rephrase that. It would be nice, but only for awhile. Did you ever hear of 'island fever'? I'm pretty sure your daughters would start to freak after a few months or so....possibly you too.

I recently met a woman here in Jersey who was originally from Hawaii. I told her about my love for the islands and how much I wish I could live there again...how I always wished I was born there. She looked at me, smiled and said, "Robin, do you know how much I dreamed each night that there was a highway on Oahu that went straight to California. Where there was an escape off the island...a place where I could keep driving and driving and not stop for hours and hours and hours?" I just looked away, looked back at her and replied "The grass is always greener, isn't it?"

If you want to move to an island, if you really, really want to start your own civilization, visit the Island of many Storms located in the heart of it all. Once you're there, you will find that the sky is beautiful, the robin sings daily and there is a 'mike' so you can practice your comedy, (of course a great public school for your daughters) you will realize that Stormy days bring Sunny days and every day we are all on our own "island"...

By the use of huge dredging operations, islands are being built. huge flower pattern design islands are under construction in coastal areas of UAE, You can have your own custom designed island, for the right price.

I'll bet you could buy the NY Islanders for dirt cheap. Have the team lie in the ocean and just live there.....

Actually. I have found two that might be to your liking...they are off the coast of Italy...which may or may not appeal to you.

Now this one is only .7 acres, so you'd have to have a pretty small civilization:

Volpera Island is a small private island is situated in the Laguna di Grado, near Venice. Access is via a small bridge from the mainland. The island is nicely treed with 30 year old trees, and features a 3-bedroom, 646 sq. foot (60 sq. metre) wooden house, as well as an outdoor swimming pool. Fresh water is supplied by a 495 foot (150 m) artesian well. Hot and cold water is available, and heat and electricity are provided by a gas generator.

The other one, Gallinaro Island, is 30 acres, and could support a pretty robust civiliation:

The Island has several miles of interior roads. The road starts at the harbour and winds up to the highest point on the island and branches off to other parts of the island.

Located half way up the road is a small chapel that was built over 200 years ago in honor of Saint Martin, the Bishop of Tours. In the middle ages, he escaped from religious persecution and hid on the island for more than 3 years. At that time, Benedictan monks were living on the island.

Well, since you posted this in the Caribbean section, try this one: http://www.privateislandsonline.com/hogcay.htm
It's a steal at 19 million. So when you hit the powerball jackpot, remember who pointed you in the right direction, and let me have the caretaker's cottage.

Three Mile Island near Harrisburg, Pa. It comes with a slightly used nuclear power plant. You could probably turn that into a nice bed and breakfast or museum. A little gift shop with radioactive trinkets would be a great idea. My understanding is the price is right.

If you don't want an island in the middle of a hurricane path and you like changes in seasons, you might try an island in the great white north! I remember a nice little Canadian island in the Lakes area north of Michigan. I camped out on it with my dad when I was kid. It was mostly stone, but it was fun camping out in the wilderness with wolves howling and owls hooting in July...

You might want to give something like that test run first though. It was about 20' diameter. At least you have fresh water instead of salt water to worry about... Probably costs less than $2 million too!

If you are going to buy an island, this is the place.

Take a look at the link and you will be amazed. Also take a look at the Palm, and the other islands that they have planed. It is way over the top.

I know in Honduras you can purchas and island for about $1,000,000.

?
South Sandwich islands, you'll never go hungry.

Easter island would be fun one time a year.

There are many of islands on sale in Greece, mostly in the Aegean sea.

Usually they are very small but something can be biuld there easily.

The prices vary. A small island may even cost 200Keuros and bigger ones, close to the coast with water and treed can reach 2 million euros.

Real estate agencies in Greece have some islands on sale. The problem for a island is not if you can buy it but to get the permits for actually building something on it. Transferring the building materials, water and electricity can be very expensive.

Right now in Greece only a couple of islands have been bought and actually someone is living on them them.
