Depending on hurricane path they change the cruise route to other safe ports.

That happened to a friend of mine a month AFTER the usual hurricane season. Almost 100% of the passengers were sick. The listing of the ship was so bad that over half of the dishes and glassware were broken so people had to eat in assigned shifts so there would be enough plates for everyone.
People were walking up the stairs on their hands and knees to keep from falling. Several port visits were cancelled and at others they wouldn't let the passengers get off.
However, she said the crew was fantastic, so helpful and kind trying to get sea sickness meds passed around.
That scared me enough so I will never take a cruise when there is a possibility of being near the hurricane season.

Being able to move about freely in the Caribbean, cruise ships (like airliners,) can avoid weather conditions easily. In fact, Carnivals 'Ecstasy' was used to help evacuate Katrina victims from New Orleans.
