Are U.S. dollars widely accepted in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic?

Going on vacation to Punta Cana next month. Do they accept US dollars there? or do I need to bring some foreign currency (and I have no idea what the currency is there)? Thanks!

OK first the currency is the PESOS DOMINICANOS (RDS)
The exchange rate is (today) for 1 us$ = 33,70 rds.
I suggest you take money from the cashier at your hotel or nearby to get less % to pay (your bank) and never change money in the street! Yes you can pay your excursions with us dollars and do schopping with the local curency, it's better and cheaper. Hope this helped and enjoy your stay!

The US dollar is the most widely accepted currency. When I visited Dominican Republic, there was a shopping center in Higuey where I paid with US dollars and they gave me the change in Dominican pesos because that was their "policy". Even though they accept dollars, next time I will exchange a small amount to Dominican pesos. (you can exchange your currency at your hotel)

U.S. Dollars are always welcome here, our economy has some dependency on that. But when you come here, don't come with large cash, just bring your Visa, MC or AMEX (confirm with your bank). Check currency before you travel.
