The USA has certain limitations for its people to visit Cuba
Besides, why go to visit the only comunist country in America, that is also a terrible enemy of the USA ? |

It is illegal for US citizens to engage in "travel-related transactions", i.e., spend money in Cuba, unless you have a special license from the US Treasury Department. Licenses are granted only for a few reasons. Pleasure travel is not one of them.
Some people go anyway. However, you can be arrested when you return if you are caught.
You can read the information on the US State Department website at this link:

You can go to Cuba by way of Mexico or Canada but why ask for trouble? What if you get sick there or in any kind of trouble? You cannot go to the American consulate (there is none). There are plenty of other places to go. |

The Cuban government allows Americans to enter but the USA bans its citizens from traveling to Cuba with out special permission for a special reason.
If they get caught going to Cuba with out permission they can get fined or imprisoned.
Americans still do fly to Cuba through Canada, Mexico, ...
Cuban immigration officials at the airports are very helpful and do not stamp your passport ( they put the entry stamp on a special tourist card).
Any vessel that has stopped in Cuba is not allowed in the US for 6 months - this is shy you don't see Cuba on many cruise itineraries.
Cuba is very safe - probably the safest place to travel in Latin and south America. Cuba is a police state every thing is highly controlled. There are police officers on almost every corner to "protect" tourists from the locals. ( and also make sure there is not too much interaction that under minds socialist ideology ). We walked in some questionable Havana street with out any discomfort. |

It's amazing how many wrong responses you are getting.
Yes, American citizens can visit Cuba, either legally or illegally. Most go illegally through a 3rd country, like Mexico for example. About 150,000 Americans travel to Cuba illegally every year.
To go legally, you need permission from the U.S. government. This is not difficult to obtain. You absolutely do not need relatives there to visit. You can visit for religious or academic reasons. Journalists are also allowed to go legally.
There are direct flights to Cuba from Miami International Airport.
It is safe to go to Cuba, but Cubans are very poor and you have to be aware of your surroundings. Wearing expensive jewelry is not a good idea. |

I was reading the answers here and wondering how so many people could have so many different answers!
Truth be told, I do know that you cannot work or live inside Cuba if you are an American. A friend of mine is half Cuban, and half Puerto Rican, born and raised in America. His family would send him to visit friends in Cuba over the summers as a child, and while they greeted him happily, he was not allowed to work in the country when he was old enough to do so. He was not allowed to earn their money.
But I also have friends who have visited Cuba quite a bit, and have no familial ties to the country. I've also heard of people studying there on a special education visa. The Cuban government isn't stupid. They won't turn away any kind of money...even if it is American. They allow students to go on a foreign exchange program, rent a room during the program, as long as they are there taking language lessons and learning about the culture. I know this because I have been trying to learn Spanish, and a young woman I was speaking to on hi5 (she lives in Cuba) told me about the program, and said that her mother houses three American students at a time during the duration of the program.
The only thing that I have heard about American restrictions is due to a trade embargo. American airplanes, ships, or the like, are not allowed on Cuban soil or waters. But, with the changes being made to the country (ie. cell phones for the public, etc.) since Fidel's brother has taken over, it may be just a matter of time before this policy changes too. |

Yes Americans can visit Cuba. Technically you'd need a travel licence from the OFAC. However many travel via 3rd country and avoid paper trails coming back home.
This information will direct you how to go to Cuba easily and without difficulty:

It is VERY safe to go to Cuba. And Cuba does not restrict Americans entry, or any other country for that matter...it is just the US who have issues with their own US citizens/residents from going. |

There are laws preventing Americans to do so. But if you went to another country first and then took a plane to Cuba...you could still go and they will let you in. |

no. unless you have a relative living there. |

Cuba will not stop Americans from entering the country. The problem is that it is illegal for U.S. citizens to go to Cuba, because of American laws preventing such. You would have to travel to a country like Mexico first and then hop on a plane to Cuba. That still is considered illegal by U.S. law but if they don't know ... |

Yes Americans are allowed by Cuba to enter freely. It is very safe to visit. I have been there and it is a marvellous place.I don't know of any country that is restricted. |

Yes and it is now safe to go and have fun. I don't know if any other countries are restritced, don't think so though.
EDIT: Ok, people aren't aware of the new laws. They are right, but a few years ago the laws were all lifted and people are now free to go. I'll find a link, hold on.....
