Are there any dangerous parts of Puerto Rico that young tourists should be aware of?!?

Me and a few teenage friends are going on vacation there this summer.. and i would prefer to book a house someplace safe, yet still be able to explore, rather than finding ourselves in trouble. I DO understand that there are parts of San Juan that may cause a problem.. other than that I haven't heard very much.. Any city names?.. Thanks for all your help!

OK everyone is saying stay away from El Morro, this is a big historical fort in Old San Juan. You don't have to stay away from El Morro. Go visit, its a must see. But the nieghborhood below off to the side of it, is called La Perla. You should stay away from here. There is a narrow tunnel type of road that leads down here, just dont wonder down. Look at this photo: its taken from El Morro, even this graveyard & everything around La Perla is fine.

Also stay away from any housing projects, called 'Caserios' in PR. Louis Lloren Torres is a really big notorious caserio. The caserios are cement buildings with balconies, almost like apt buildings. Otherwise PR is a very safe place. If you are smart you will be fine. You can travel the whole island alone, there is nothing to worry about. ENJOY your trip, PR is beautiful!

just stay within the Tourist area and if You're going exploring find a local friend that lives in Puerto rico..

In Old San Juan there's a neighborhood below the El Morro"" you don't want to go in there...neither to any Public Housing..nothing to see there..

Puerta de Tierra...Llorens Torrens..

Yes stay out of what they call La Perla in San Juan you can see this place from the top of the Fort..And if driving always with your windows closed. If you stop at a light be alert all the time . beside that do enjoy the Island , lots to see and do . have fun.

Use the same common sense you would use anywhere and you should be OK. Everyone I know that got robbed on vacation was because they let their guard down.

Dear Friend
I live in Puerto Rico and let me tell you that your going to have the best vacation ever . This island is very friendly and you dont have to worry about dangerous places because if you are a teen I asume that you'll go to beaches and disco to have fun . Usually the people that are in dangerous places are the one that looks for Illigal drugs thats when they get in trouble . So be away from those places and you'll be fine . San juan its beautiful you can go anywhere the security is awsome youll see a cop every second so dont worry you'll be in a good place. I know youll have fuuuunnnnn!!!!!!

DURING THE DAY SAN JUAN IS OK IT'S AT NIGHT THAT THE PROBLEM BEGINNINGS. TRY STAYING IN AN AREA THAT IS RECOMMENDED BY THE TOURIST BOARD OF P.R. ALSO STAY AWAY FROM EL MORO AREA THIS IS THE SLUMS AND A VERY DANGEROUS PLACE. ALSO WHEN YOU WANT TO GO OUT ALWAYS GO IN GROUPS NEVER ALONE I WOULD RECOMMEND STAYING IN A HOTEL OR RESORT IT WILL BE MUCH SAFER

garrisonbight
Much of San Juan is dangerous at night... just like in ANY city... the area around El Moro is especially dangerous, however.
