As a black person who is born and raised in the Carribean I deffinatley have to put my two cents in on this one. We dont hate "Americans" we hate the American attitude. The whole air off entitlement you give off when you come off the cruise ships or airplanes that says awww these poor black people need our money so they must serve us is what we distain. Yes, tourism is a major part of the econony but b/c you pay for services does not mean that you pay for us to kiss your rear also.

I'm sure they don't hate "Americans" they just hate American attitude of I'm better than you, we have all the best stuff in the world attitude.

Virgin Islands. Most do not hate white americans even though we think ya'll are stupid. You bring money but not your minds. We smile cause you support our economy. If you are a hot white chick with a big butt, we love you even more.

I think most caribbean islands do not hate white americans. They tend to have a very open arm policy with all tourist. Any negativity you might come across might have to do with color more than citizenship. As sometimes people of darker complexions are often less well off economically than those of lighter complexions. Every once in a while you might joked at (in fun) but hate? That is not usually a caribbean makeup just because your american or white. The only complaint you'll hear from most is when Americans or any nationality for that matter visits another country without having respect for it cultures, traditions, mannerisms and so forth. Hence the American attitude is often seen by others as being arrogant and rude. Now in other places such as England, Italy, France, being white is not why your hated but being American is.

i take the point that the caribbean likes the money americans bring in, but quite frankly American tourists are usually obnoctious loud and totally oblivious to the local way of life, this is not of just Caribbean islands either, its across the world. Its not only the Americans either, im originally English now living in the Caribbean, i hate meeting brits on holiday, they too are not plesent.
Of course not every tourist is a pain in the backside, but i have met too many embarassing tourists which makes me just want to avoid all tourists as much as possible.

It's not white American's or any other race or nationality. I've been to numerous Caribbean islands on cruises and they all like American's as much as anyone else. It's the attitude that they don't like whether American, French, Canadian, where ever.

I ask a cab driver in St. Maarten and one in Nassau if American's were liked or frowned upon there and they both said their islands love the American people because as a whole they are nice and yes, bring a lot of tourism money to the islands. Interestingly enough, on the Dutch side of St. Maarten/St. Martin the cab driver said they don't like French tourist as much even though the St. Martin side is the French territory. In Nassau the man said the Greeks have the attitude (keeping in mind that's just one cab drivers opinion).

And as a note, the St. Maarten driver said a lot of rich Americans take there yachts down there in January through March to get worked on and they love their money but hate their attitudes.

I'm a white American and have had nothing but very good reception from Caribbean islands to the point of bending over backwords to help you out and make sure everything is going good and I'm not rich. They are very nice people in the Caribbean and the have the greatest hospitality in the world and don't get into the "like you or hate you because of who you are or where you come from".

It's like a friend of mine from Iran tells people all the time; when you hear Iran hates the West, it's not the people of Iran hating the people of the US, it's the government hating our government because of political ways.

Barbados seems to be very tolerant of Americans that display good manners. Isn't that the case everywhere?

If unsure about what good manners are expected, check out some of the books written that educate people to different cultural beliefs. I found it fascinating and rewarding.

I have never had a problem traveling anywhere knowing what that countries expectations are.
