You're safe. I have yet to hear of bad shark encounters in the DR...but apparently the northern coast has dolphins, sharks, seals, stingrays, etc....and people specifically go out to see them. Check the links and read about it....But nothing to worry about. And that being said, you'll be fine swimming in the water. You will be very safe. Obviously the resorts are protective in these matters. |

I have never heard about anyone getting bite by shark.
You are basically safe.
Enjoy your stay and of course the beach :--))
Good luck!! |

I don't believe so. I am going to Puerto Plata in a few weeks and i was wondering the same thing, I HATE sharks also, they just creep me out. So I will let you know if i see any. Boy do i hope i don't while i am in the water. |

Hi. In the DR are no sharks, but out in the ocean.....far out.I don't think you want to swim several 100 of meters out. All the tourist areas have coralreefs where the sharks cannot pass. On the other hand , they have sharks in Ocean World in Puerto Plata, you could swim with, they got fed before. |

First correct this : The north coast dont have sharks and it is very rare the ear about them here in the Dominican Republic.
The only place where they may appear is in comic books and sometimes in movies.
No problem at all. For the people who go to Punta Cana this is sometimes a problem with barracudas but no sharks, because you are close to the Mona canal (Puerto Rico) and their the sharks are waiting for the Dominicans who want to go to Puerto Rico (illegals). The best part is Puerto Plata, bigger beaches and most important much more to see and discover. Any way enjoy it! |
