Well, I'm glad Mike is such an expert on Haiti. I lived there for 2 years and speak CREOLE and I would not consider going back there because it has become TOO DANGEROUS. AND... I have been in OVER 160 COUNTRIES a lot of them WAR ZONES... so I'll put my travel background up against his at any time..; and I would STILL not go back to Haiti because IT'S TOO DANGEROUS.

Yes, but it still wont stop me going there when I get round to backpacking through the carribean in a couple of years. (I have other places planned for this year and next year!)

Thanks for the good luck, but I think I'll be fine. People get far too hung up on 'ooh thats a dangerous place to travel'. Most placs are fine as long as you respect and follow the culture and take reasonable steps to protect yourself.

For example I have served in many places, including Iraq.
I have backpacked through most of Europe, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Malaysia, Borneo and Sabah (including the South where there are the exact same warnings of kidnappings and piracy) some of the Philliphines, Egypt and the Sudan, Morrocco and the Sahara desert, a lot of the middle east and some of S.America with the obvious comparisons.

Just relax and enjoy your travels I say!

I always feel concerned when people on Y/A think that travel there is safe. We went eight years ago on a mission trip to build a school and since then every proposed trip has had to be cancelled because of the dangerous conditions. That FCO warning is by no means exaggerated.

Some people carry away a false impression because they visit the completely atypical Labadée, which is a carefully protected tourist resort visited by cruise ships. The rest of the country is very different.

Haiti is a particularly dangerous "country" because of its overabundance of Negroes and its almost complete lack of humans.

These descendants of African slaves have never achieved the patina of civilization and humanity of many other Negroes.

Because of this total absence of normal human morals, the Haitian Negroes have continued to devolve.

When initially removed from Africa in the mid-19th Century, they acquired nominal human characteristics on their voyage to the "New World", but when even slave owners dismissed them as hopeless, they congregated in what is now known as Haiti.

Here they practice ritual murder, human sacrifice, cannibalism and Zombieism, all the while practicing their religion of Voodooism.

Humans venturing to Haiti are advised to bring with them trinkets which appeal to the "darkie", such as a common Bic lighter. With this device, one can "magically" make fire and impress the locals.

Portable DVD players and iPods filled with hiphop "music" tend to excite the Negroes, and when in this state, they become highly dangerous.

Another useful item would be an Uzi automatic weapon to be used when the novelty of the Bic lighter wears away and the Negroes wish to kill and eat its owner.

Bring your own food and drink, as that which is available locally is not usually acceptable to the human palate.

Jamaica or haiti?

Yeah good luck in Haiti. They will come at you with machetes first and then find out if you have anything. It's a country where people eat mud just to feel full. They will kill you for your shoes alone. There is nothing there and in half the country they don't even use money. You can see the border between Haiti and the Dom Rep from space because all of the trees have been cut down to make charcoal.
