As a British citizen, do I need a work permit/visa to work in Bermuda?

Hmm?

Correct, you will need a permit to work here. The Good news is that temporary work permits are fairly fast and easy to get. Bad news is, anything over temporary work permits are not, permanent work permits (up to 3 years in term) can take up to 6 months to process. I am on my 2ND temp, and my perm has just come through (5Mo's) . My wife has to go to immigration every 21 days to get an extension on her "visitation permission", but it's worth it! We love it here!!
Check out all the display employment ad's on this website. Some companies are corporate recruiters, and temp services. They recruit everyhting from CEO's to restaurant workers. Easiest way to get here is find a job, let them worry about the work permit.

Here is the website for The Bermuda Telephone Directory look for corp. services, recruiters and temp firms.

Good luck ~ see you @ the Swizzle Inn, Blackbeard's, or The White Horse:)

Yes, you will need a work permit. The reason it's harder for you to come here and work as appose to me going to England is because this island is only 21 miles long and with a population of 65,000, the government here has to make sure that the locals are employed first. If there is no one qualified to do the job locally then people from overseas can get the job. The housing situation here can be a nightmare. If you got the money then that won't be too much of a problem. A one bedroom apt. (flat) can be $2,000 a month and up.(even that's considered reasonable)

Yes. Many people are surprised by how difficult it can be to obtain work permits in British Overseas Territories as a UK national. Bermuda introduced a system imposing a seven year limit on work permit holders a few years ago, which meant that after they had been there six years even key workers had to leave. Preference is always given to local people and foreigners are issued with permits only for jobs where there are no local takers. You may find this link informative http://www.immigration.gov.bm/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_2746_214_515_43/http%3B/portalcontent.gov.bm%3B7087/publishedcontent/publish/ministry_of_labour_home_affairs_and_public_safety/immigration/dept___immigration___work_permits/pages/w2___closed_and_restricted_categories.html
If you have a trade or profession for which it is hard to recruit local people, then you may well be fortunate. Give it a go! http://www.bermuda-online.org/

YES. The websire has the best infor for you. Here is some of the content from the site.
An employer, not an employee, applies to the Bermuda Government for a Work Permit.

Employers seeking an employees place advertisements in the print editions only of local newspapers. They request a Work Permit for a specific named employee who is not Bermudian if they are satisfied no qualified Bermudians have applied for that specific position. They must stipulate this.

Newcomers - prospective employees living beyond Bermuda - with no prospective Bermuda employer yet should consider buying a subscription to the Electronic Edition of Bermuda's only daily newspaper The Royal Gazette, Bermuda's only daily newspaper, to reply directly to specific advertisements issued by specific employers that match their qualifications. Only send resumes in reply to specific advertisements, those with a reference number and "reply-by" date.

Importing workers from developing nations is difficult or impossible because of a requirement that the UK, US or Canada must first issue a transit visa, even after they are granted work permits by Bermuda Immigration. Without transit visas they cannot come. Neither the Governor nor Deputy Governor can help as issuing transit visas did not involve Government House and that they have no influence over it. The USA is also withholding transit visas for some workers bound for Bermuda. The US Immigration Department states that in order to get a transit visa via the USA applicants must demonstrate strong social, economic and/or family ties outside the United States.
