As an American do I need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico?

As a gringo living in Puerto Rico, I will attest to the no passport statement.

American Citizens do not need a passport when traveling from the mainland US to Puerto Rico (or from US territories to Puerto Rico). It is considered a domestic flight. When you check in for the flight, it is like any domestic flight - including online checkin. When you get off the plane, no customs or immigration - go pick up your luggage if you checked bags, and go to your hotel.

In fact, the official PR Government travel website, http://www.gotopuertorico.com/ shows the "No Passport Required" logo right on the front page.

Furthermore, the CIA world factbook shows puerto rico as: "organized territory of the US with commonwealth status"
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/rq.html

Last, read this : http://www.gotopuertorico.com/passport-information.php

Long story short, as a US citizen, you do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico from another US city.

No Puerto Rico is a US territory and therefore does not require a passport. State issued ID is all you need.

U.S. Citizens traveling to and returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the U.S. territory and do not need to present a passport.
U.S. territories include:
American Samoa
Guam
Northern Mariana Islands
Puerto Rico
Swains Island
U.S. Virgin Islands

no, u dont. puerto rico is a us territory

Puerto Rico is a country that has a free association state status with the US. No passport required yet for US citizens traveling from the US

Only if as an american citizen you are traveling to PR from another country like Spain, Mexico, Jamaica. As in any international flight you will need your passport.

But if traveling from an US state, or an US territory to PR (domestic flight) no passport is required.

I would look this up on a government website to be sure. I wouldn't trust Yahoo Answers. What if you get the airport and find out you needed something you didn't have? That would suck!
