Highly Favoured
Since you are talking about St. John that means that you are visiting the U S Virgin Islands. You do not necessarily need a passport if you are flying in or out from NYC. If you do not have a passport you can use some other travel document to re-enter the US.

Nevertheless, as of June 1, 2009 you will need a passport, a passport card or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland security.

If you are an American citizen, flying to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you do not now, nor will you ever need a passport for this trip. If you are an American flying to the British Virgin Islands, or visiting them during your trip, you need a passport. See site below to read list of Islands, and see which are American and which are British.

No passport unless you go to the BVIs.

charlie is correct. lived here for the last four years. do make sure you have your birth certificate and drivers license as many times when you exit the islands without a passport customs will ask for them.
be safe, don't walk alone, and don't show all your money when you pay. someone is usually looking.

the u.s. virgin islands are u.s. territory. if you are born in the u.s. virgin islands your an American citizen.

To clarify, even with the Wester Hemisphere initiative, you still do not need a passport to travel between the U.S. and the US Virgin Islands (also all US terriories plus Puerto Rico). HOWEVER, it has been a long standing rule (although Customs lets you through) that you have a document showing US citizenship such as a birth certificate because the USVI is officially considered a port of entry. Meaning that you "clear" customs before you enter the US. Basically, when you get back to the states, the flight is considered domestic and there is no customs on the other end.

Nope i went on a cruise to st thomas then did an excursion that went to st john and i didnt get a stamp or have to show it, they are both american properties and dont need one. I did when i went to st marteen though becuse it is not US property.

Well you never said if you are a US citizen or not you just said tha you will be leaving from NYC. Anyway once you are a US citizen you do not need a passort to travel to any US territory which would include Puerto rico as well as USVI.

Who?
Yes you do.
