Nooneuno, as us jamaicans say is an eediat!
True jamaica has it's ghettos and poverty but you can't experience 80% of the island in a vacation much less a lifetime. There is no beach in the US, not even key west, that can compare to the worst beach in JA, which by far would be in Kingston!
One person said it right before. Go where the locals go and things will be cheaper for you. Not as cheap as it is for them cuz your not a local, and unless you can blend in, accent and all, they can tell. Now in tthe tourist areas which there are plenty of, yeah its comparable to the US. It is a country run on tourism, what do you expect?! JA has few beggars, tons of hustlers. they are very aggressive compared to many other countries, but in JA that type of aggression is just a way of life. Live a little get aggressive back! (in a nice way, not I'm going to rip ur head off way!)
Trick of the trade, pull a local, have them get things for you, pay them a small sum and you'll end up saving a ton of money.
Avg cost of bread 50cUS for JA, tourist 2dolla.
Beer 1.50 us for JA, tourist tree doll or more.
Simple meal out (meat, salad, and drink)
3-5dollaUS for JA, tourist 15dolla and more.
Fancy meal out, 10dollaUS for JA, 25 dolla and more for tourist.
Good luck!

As with any island economy, don't expect cheap unless you go where the locals go. |

bread - around 120 dollars depending on size etc.(£1)
beer - red stripe costs around 150 dollars a bottle.(1.10)
taxis - around 50 dollars to 150 dollars depending on length of journey.(70p to 1.10)
meals out - vary depending on place you eat. |

Well it depends on where you buy and if your spending us dollars.
Go to a super market Bread from $120.00 up depending on the size. Beer at a regular bar $100.00 up you can pay $150 and get a really nice meal at a local restaurant but again it depends on what your buying and where.
I suggest you find someone you can trust to escort you around until you have learned the ropes of Jamaica.
And PS. it is always better to Change your Currency and spend Jamaican dollars you get over priced less. |

The prices are average, but one little piece of advice is to keep your American dollars, I exchanged my American money into Jamaican money, and most places there perfer Amercian money. I had to come back to the states and exchange it here. |

$1 US dollar is about $65 Jamaican dollar. Things might seem expensive there but when it works out to almost the same price anyways. Eg. bus travel could cost about $60 Jamaican dollar which is roughly $1 US. A good restaurant cost roughly $1500 which is about $20 US. |

EVERYTHING is expensive |

Everything is expensive. I recently returned from a trip to Jamaica and had a horrible time while there. I say this....because maybe this will prevent you from making the same mistake I did. I was really surprised too, I had been expecting a pretty, clean, simple place where I could relax and enjoy the natural beauty. That doesn't exist there. And I drove around enough to see the lions share of the island as well as probably 80% of the resorts there. So I feel like I can safely say this since I was just there.
I would never ever go back there even if I was offered a free trip. It was terrible in most every way you can think of. Jamaica is like one huge ghetto. The locals prey upon tourist, try to sell you everything from drugs to cheap trinkets, they will not take no....and a few were down right scary. The resorts are ok at best. The food is awful and terribly expensive. Water is terrible. Customer service is non-existant.
Jamaica is a great example of paridise lost by poverty, corrupt government and social decay. I was soooo happy to get back to the US. Any of our beach areas will beat anything you might see in Jamaica by far, be less expensive and safer by a long shot. |
