Bahamas getaway for 2.... suggestions??

I'm trying to plan a weekend getaway to the Bahamas for my wife and I. I'm thinking the BAHAMAS because it's not that long of a flight from where I live (New Jersey, USA), the only problem is that I've never been there and I'm looking for a nice, laid back, relaxing place in the BAHAMAS where my wife and I can spend a couple of days together just to relax and unwind (I have 2 kids, a 4yr old and a 1yr old... lol).

Basically somewhere in the Bahamas that's a little off the beaten path and not full of ACTION like on the main island.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I'm planing to go at the beginning of September 2007 and don't really have a WHOLE lot of time to ask around and research.

Thanks in advanced!

I've stayed at Orange Hill Beach Inn at Cable Beach on the island of Nassau twice (the second time I actually got married there within the grounds) and it was fabulous. It was so laid back and relaxing and I would recommend it to anyone. The hotel is an old plantation house that has been converted and sits about 100 yards from the beach. It's location is about 20 mins from downtown Nassau, so it is nice and peaceful, but still not too far away if you fancy a night out in town or at the cassino.

The staff were all so friendly and welcoming that all of the guests soon felt at home. An example of how chilled the place was is that they had a bar that was an 'honour' bar which basically meant that you helped yourself to your cocktails, spirits, sodas or beer etc. and just ticked off on a tab sheet on the bar what you'd had to drink. Then you settled up with them at the end of the night or the end of your stay - it was that laid back!

There was a little resteraunt on site that served all home cooked dishes or you could get a taxi or bus into town. The staff also laid on a kind of shuttle service with their own transport at certain times of day. It's a fantastic place. You can arrange to go snorkelling near by. The ocean is so clear and blue that yous see lots of fish and coral. I recommend it 100%.

Anyway, here is a link to their web site:

http://www.orangehill.com/index.htm

If you book directly through them online and arrange your own flights then it works out so much cheaper than a package deal through a tour operator. The hotel is only ten mins drive from the airport too, so the taxi fare would be minimal (you can't hear any aircraft from the hotel though, that wouldn't be an issue.) If you take my advice and stay here you won't go far wrong.

What ever you decide, hope you and your good lady have a brilliant time. Enjoy.

Hi,

Since we live on Eleuthera, 20 minutes by air from Nassau and since I've written an informative site about Eleuthera, I'd suggest you read this page first...
http://www.discover-eleuthera-bahamas.com/eleuthera.html

My recommendation... Stay at Uniques - mentioned on the above page - where we stayed the first weeks we spent on the island. The beach is breath-taking, the hotel has only 8 rooms and there are a few restaurants nearby. One is Tippy's on...
http://www.discover-eleuthera-bahamas.com/tippys.html

Fly into Nassau cheaply via JetBlue or SpiritAir and then via SouthernAir into Governor's Harbour (code GHB).
All air travel to Eleuthera info are on...

I'm sure you'll have a great time on "our" island.

To get away from it all you have to goto PINK SANDS.

http://www.islandoutpost.com/PinkSands/

It is a big plane, a small plan, a taxi, a water taxi, and a golf cart ride away. Leave early in the morning and you will be drinking by early afternoon.

Harbour island is wonderful, starting to get a little hustle and bustle down town where you come in...but nothing like the main islands..handsful of people at most.

Once at pink sands all you can do is relax. Get up in the morning- drink a coffee and some fresh bread in the garden restaurant, walk to the beach...relax...eat at the blue bar..drink 5 rum pina colada's and Kalik's...watch the sunset...eat dinner...drink...watch the cruise ships pass on horizon..

You can opt to walk / golf cart into town and get fresh made breakfast and eat at some of the "small" restaurants if you want.

There is not much to do besides relax, listen to music, drink, eat..and hang out on the beach--which is awesome.

I would highly recommend going to pink sands to lay back and relax...you wont be disappointed.
