Bahamas or Jamaica? 3 single women ranging from 20-32 yrs of age, which part/Carib should we visit in Jan? |
Trying to plan a trip to Jamaica but now someone is throwing the Bahamas my way. It is just 3 single women who love all aspects of travel, adventure, shop, drink, food and anything else we can think of. We do not want to be stuck on Hotel grounds the whole time. We want to explore and shop and walk around. Crime is everywhere and I am from a large major city so that doesnt help me in choosing Bahamas over Jamaica. Where would we get our best value for all of our entertainment and shopping for nice things? |

Ive been to both many times....I think they are both good/but Jamaica may have more to offer especially for the dollar. Negril is awsome....gorgeous beach(7Mile) lots of watersports ,clubs, concerts and cheap eats but far from rest of Island. Ocho Rios another choice. closer to touristy things to do beaches not as nice, shopping, food, clubs are plentiful. In either case be careful the natives(men) can be restless and love the American woman....so that can either be good or bad...depends on how much adventure u really want LOL. I ended up marrying a Jamaican. (my souvenir from JA) |

I've been to both and my preference is Jamaica. Bahamas are nice if you stay on Paradise Island or one of the smaller private islands. Otherwise, I found it dirty and VERY touristy. Jamaica has much more to see and do. If you're up for adventure, I'd choose Jamaica. |

You shouldnt go to Jamaica, you should come to The Bahamas instead... Atlantis is a great resort and on the island of Nassau there are a whole lot of things to do, scuba, kewl shops, great eats, scooters, swimming with the dolphins, crystal clear waters and sandy beaches for miles... There is also a great night life.. Many clubs located down town...Senor Frogs is one..Its also fairly warm in Jan so no coats needed. You also have the option to island hop, whether you wanted to stay a night in Nassau and then go to Grand Bahama. Bahamas is the place to be.. |

There have been many recent kidnappings in Jamaica so be careful if you decide to go there. Right now, I'd say it's safer to go to the Bahamas.
If you're still looking for the lowest price to book your flight, try http://Luxe.worldventures.com.
They search all the other main sites like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, hotel and airline sites and offer you the lowest price. You’ll save even more when you book it as a package like air and hotel together. |

Crime may not scare you but I thought Jamaica was genuinely frightening. It's not so much the crime but the people there were really unfriendly to us. I think they really dislike tourists there. People kept telling my mom "White woman go home". I traveled to a lot of places but I think the people in Jamaica were the unfriendliest people I ever met. By the way the house next to where we stayed had a yard full of large Doberman pinschers. We wondered why they had them since we didn't see much in the way of crime. Then the night before we left someone broke into our house and took all our money and our rental car. They came in the room where we were sleeping. I don't know what would have happened if one of us woke up. After that we figured out why our neighbor had many many gaurd dogs! My advice would be wherever you go don't rent a house. Stay in a big resort with lots of security. And ask for advice before going sightseeing. There are some areas you should seriously avoid. I heard that in Jamaica there was one area that was so dangerous even the police wouldn' go there. I would definitely stick with big guided tours. Hope this helps! |

there is a place I like in Freeport Bahamas. Crime seems to be pretty low. we had no problems. The place I went to is a condo rental called Coral Beach.
Email this person: mbertch@stsci.edu she'll hook you up with her own place. Pool, beachside, and casinos/marketplace nearby with plenty of restaurants. |

We went on a cruise to Jamaica and Grand Cayman. Years ago I went to the Bahamas every other weekend for a few months.
I fell in love with Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island. The Bahamians were very nice, and the island was really beautiful.
Jamaica was the biggest disappointment. We went to Ocho Rios. Dunn's River Falls was really beautiful, but I have seen just as beautiful falls in the North Georgia mountains. It is very poor, and very dirty. In all fairness, some people have told us we should go to a different part of the Island, but we will never go back there. The Jamaican people seemed to hate the tourists, and I mean HATE! Even my Jamaican friends have told me never to go away from your tour or resort. It is very dangerous. In the Bahamas, you could rent a jeep and explore the island safely.
Grand cayman was the best. The people were so beautiful. They were fun, and playful, and tourists did not seem to be an annoyance to them. The water was the most beautiful I have ever seen. We snorkeled in several places, and the scenery could not be beat. We want to go back there for an extended stay next time. I would love to live there!
Good luck on your trip planning!

You know they are really both great and you would have a great time either place. In Jamaica the dollar is down, so it's probably cheaper to go there however the Bahamas has more of that quaint, islandy feel. Jamaica is a very huge place with great distances between things. In the Bahamas there is always a couple of beaches within walking distance. New Providence is only seven miles by twenty one miles so it is actually possible to drive around the entire island in a couple of hours. this island is home to over 150,000 people and i think this makes New Providence very original and interesting. The people there are extremely friendly and comfortable where they are. In Jamaica I felt more desperation from the people, like a lot of them want to leave and go to America. If you love water sports and beaches, go Bahamas. If you love mountains and nature trails, go Jamaica. Jamaica is spicy and the Bahamas is laid back. I hope this helps a little. |

neither, Cozumel Mexico, it is a great place to shop and see Mexico, or go to see Mayan ruins, but I have been told by more than one they love the shopping there, and I like it too. It is a pretty island just don't get the first taxi you see we walked out of the port and up the road just a little bit and got a taxi for half the price as at the port, and that was to see the whole island.
or and eastern Caribbean is best for shopping I've been told but cost a more, and is next on my list of travel
been to the Bahamas ans it is OK has its history and the Atlantic id nice but the city in dirty and the people are pushy.
Have friends who have been to both and thy say Jamaica is worse than the Bahamas, so have not gone, yet. |

My vote is for Jamaica, I have been to both and really did not care for the Bahamas. Both are places for 3 single woman to have a blast though. Have a Grand Time KG |
