Benefits of Summit of the Americas to Trinidad and Tobago?

The country is spending hundreds of million of dollars in preparing for the Summit. Some say it could even be more than a billion.

Try as I may apart for for international media coverage for a few days I cannot justify this kind of expenditure.

I mean even the media coverage will be centered mostly around the Waterfront area. Most of the delegates will see mostly other international visitors and will hardly see the rest of the country.

I guess some journalists may venture outside the capital city to cover the spouses movements but could we not get the same exposure or even better from some well made tourist ads and brochures?

Lets see....we had
MISS UNIVERSE...which was supposed to benefit the country
CRICKET WORLDCUP...which was supposed to benefit the country
SPORTING HEROS...which was supposed to benefit the country
FOREIGN INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKERS...which was supposed to benefit the country

Yet....most of the international world...still never heard about Trinidad and Tobago. So .....with regards to Media Coverage....and putting TnT on the MAP....well....if we ent reach on the MAP yet....I don't know.

Although...I have no problems with TNT hosting a Summit, I would have thought it would be when TnT actually could have afforded to do it. But.....when...spending close to a billion dollars in this time....when hardships knocking on everybody door....and that money could have been spent to take care of the citizens.....well... it leaves me in amazement. I just don't see us as any Priority to the Government.

40 odd years of Governence...and you now trying to work miracles in two months.....with regards to infrastructure and maintenance...because...yuh don't want to look like a damn fool infront of your internationlal colleagues. And....only on routes that will be utilised. How stupid are we. Oh....is not the summit....is coincidence. Wait...we are stupid..because..nobody wants to get up and oppose this nonsense....we just take it. Is we money...but we doh care how they spend it. Anyway...let the dust settle after...and all them ppl who get employment for summit....is wonder whats going to happen to them after...and will all this nice work that suddenly is priority..will it still be priority...and will it extend to places that actually need it. Will the rural villages...and villagers finally get water and electricity?? Will their roads get repaired....will their Health Centres be upgraded. Will we not have to wait 6mnt - year for a passport.
Anyway...summit on the way and it have no turning back. For the sake of us all.....I truly hope we see the benefits unlike other past events.
But let us don't forget....Mrs Tishera... and CLICO and all these issues that taking backseat for the summit. Oh wait....we forget already.
Thumbs up...or Thumbs down....you don't have to agree...but then...you is not me.

I like to show off my country, its culture, food, music etc like any other proud Trini. But is this really the best way to do it?

Besides the historical experiences of these summits, conferences etc show that its all just a lot of ole talk. Just today April 15 there is an article in a daily newspapper that shows Trinidad and Tobago itself has not been adhering to the agreements reached in past summits!!

Jouvert
Well said Trinitrish. I agree with you 100%.
