Best City/Resort to stay in Jamaica?

Jamaica is a gorgeous island with lush greenery. Of course there are some scattered poor shanty towns but the people in those towns are very warm and welcoming. I had the privelege of meeting some of the folks that live along the hillside of the Blue Mountains and they are just great! I stayed at Point Village resort and the service and staff are really great there. In Negril you can go down to Rick's Cafe and enjoy a beautiful sunset or if you are as adventurous as I, you can jump off the cliff into the crystal blue waters!

The night clubs I visited there are Loveboat and The Jungle. They are both happening places! Another cool spot is Margaritaville or you can check out one of the many free beach concerts (free most times other times a minimal charge).

In Montego Bay I stayed at the Holiday Inn and they have tons of fun activities all day. They have a free trip for guests to the Margarativille in MoBay. It's nice and fun! You can walk down the 'Hip Strip' in MoBay and shop or just sightsee.

In Trelawny I stayed at FDR Pebbles (a really great resort) and from there you can visit the famous Annie Palmer's house at Rosehall. It has mythical legends and it is a beautiful property.

Dunns River waterfalls is a nice featured attraction and the water is refreshingly cold as you climb the falls. In Ocho Rios you can check out the Dolphin Cove and pay for a swim with the Dolphins. I did and it was worth every dime! The Martha Brae river boasts a wonderful, tranquil rafting experience on a bamboo raft.

In the Trelawny area you can also visit the glistening waters by the 'Luminous Lagoon' where the water glows in the night.

In Kingston area if you are adventurous you can arrange for a guided hike to the peak of the Blue Mountains. You can also go to the old fort in Port Royal where the 'Giddy House' is located (when you walk through you are supposed to be giddy :) because of the slanting of the building. You can also go by the Helshire beach area and dine at one of the many food vendors there (ask for Aunt Mays) the food is great.

As far as safety, use the same instincts you would as when you are in your hometown. You wouldn't go to an unknown place without someone who knows the place right? Jamaica is generally safe especially in the tourist spots because it is the main revenue generator. Occasionally you would see a police patrol in the resort spots which gives a sense of comfort. I have never been robbed or mugged in Jamaica and I have been in shopping markets with my wife and no one bothered us. If on the other hand you are disrespectful of the jamaican people prepare for the consequences. I have seen some fellow Americans on holiday there and they tend to act like apes, usually they are the ones that get in trouble and has negative things to say about Jamaica and Jamaicans. Remember every country has its share of crime. If you took a poll of any developed super-power versus a small third-world country you would find that proportionately the crime rates are lower in the third-world countries.

As I said the Jamaicans are friendly people and once you respect them in their country you would get a warm and respectful treatment. If you are an American, check your attitude at the US airport of departure and arrive in in Jamaica with an open mind and respect for jamaicans and their country and you would do just fine.

My parents once went to Negril and loved it. You can fly into Montego Bay and get a bus or taxi to there. Ocho Rios is also said to be nice, with Heave-Ho Charters providing sailing services. Montego Bay might have a better selection but is definitely more "touristy."

You can go to the Holiday Inn, Sunset Beach Resort or you can check out the Rose Hall Luxury Resort and Country Club and the Sandals Royal Caribbean. These are all in Montego Bay in close proximity to the Sangster's International Airport. Good places i would recommend them to anyone. I llive in Montego Bay.

Ocho-Rios, and Sandals resort.

Had a friend who stayed there and loved it. Good price, great all inclusive and fantastic ammenities. Avoid Montego bay or Kingston. Alot of crime, drug dealers, and not as nice water or hillside views.

Negril would be a DISTANT second to Ocho-Rios.

My boyfriend and I just came back from Jamaica. We stayed in Montego Bay at the Breezes resort. We had a wonderful time. The place isn't exactly 5 star, more like 3 star. The rooms are small, but the place is fabulous. The people are wonderful and its all inclusive. Who cares if the room is small, you are in paradise, no need ot stay inside all day. It's also located on Doctor's Cave Beach and its absolutely beautiful. It's one of the top 5 beaches in the world. Its located on the hip strip which basicall y a street where you can shop and find lots of bars and clubs and restaurants. It's so much fun. You can take a tour to Ochos Rios and climb the Dunn's River Falls or you can go to Rick's Cafe in Negril to see cliff diving or do it yourself. You can also try the canopy tour, zip-lining through the jungle!!! Jamaica is absolutely beautiful as well as the people and the food. I highly reccommend it!!!

I've been to jamaica many times, my boyfriend is from there. Negril is my favorite spot! Lot's of cool clubs and the beach is incredible!!

Sandal's or Beach's are both good choices in all inclusives. IMHO Negril with it's 7 mile white sand beach, has all the activities and nightlife you want.

I have to go with Sandals and Beaches... One is adults only and the is very friendly-family oriented.

Have stayed at Grand Lido Negril & Grand Lido Braco and enjoyed both. They are part of Super Clubs resorts, which also own the Breezes & Hedonism resorts (less expensive than the Grand Lido resorts & tend to have younger average age). I've always enjoyed any place I've been in the Caribbean, though I wouldn't look to stay at some of the very inexpensive hotels -always figured that, to some extent at least, you get what you pay for.

i would Advise staying in Ocho Rios and stay in Sunset Jamaica Grand all inclusive. its a wonderful resort and the food is great, the pools and beaches are fun and there are always activities on the beach, during the day and the evening. There is also the Rui Ocho Rios all inclusive, this is one is fairly new and everything is lovely there. Both of these resorts are close to shopping areas and Dunns River falls, but since theres so much things to do in the hotels you might never get the chance to leave!! :)

Go to TripAdvisor.com for hundreds of reviews about all the resorts on the entire island! Good and bad with a star-rating system that you can compare with the frommers.com website too.

And don't forget to check out the coolest Jamaican website of them all www.jamaicans.com they even have stuff about patois language translation, cultural, political, news, etc...

First off, I'd say consider another island (Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada, etc.) Jamaica has a high crime rate and it's only one of MANY beautiful islands! Antigua is my personal favorite. Their slogan is "365 beaches. One for each day of the year." Whatever you decide...have fun!
