If this is your 1st time in PR you should stay in the Isla Verde area. Great beach, lots of restaurants at walking distance and it's a great area for partying. Also is very close to others attractions like El Yunque Rainforest, Old San Juan and Condado area.

You might need to rent a car to go outside the San Juan metro area.

RainbowBrite
Old San Juan for a small downtown cobblestoned streets, ancient building feeling! And historic sites!
Rincon for a quieter adventure!
Aguadilla
Rio Piedres for Plaza Las Americas shopping mall!
Culbera for white sand beaches!
Condado for nightlife!

Besides the answers provided by “Rainbow” and “rockand” I suggest you to search some websites which provide useful information before leaving to Puerto Rico, so your trip will be a success.

Place: Welcome to Puerto Rico! provides huge information regarding the Island and tourist information
Link: http://welcome.topuertorico.org/
Tourist Information: http://welcome.topuertorico.org/tinfo.shtml

Place: Escape to Puerto Rico
Description: Provides useful information regarding the Island of Puerto Rico. Also contains: Plan Your Trip, Getting to and around, “Visitor Information” and many more. Also included in the site: WHERE TO EAT, if you are looking for a particular food or special places to go to eat together your boyfriend, MMMMM! Enjoy your food.
Link: http://escape.topuertorico.com/

Place: Go To Puerto Rico from: Puerto Rico Tourism Company
Description: Another site to visit to plan your trip. Incluye “PARADORES” and a special section: PLAN YOUR TRIP. Take a look!

As “rockand” stated in his answer, you might need to rent a car to travel outside San Juan. When renting a car, also rent a “navigator” so you don’t get lost and ask to the wrong person. You never know!

Enjoy your trip! Bring some “tostones” or “alcapurrias”. SHHHH! Don’t tell nobody about it.

You should check out Vieques. Its a small island off the East Coast of Puerto Rico. Its beautiful and barely touched my tourists because not many tourists go there. If you are looking for seclusion and tranquiltiy, Vieques is the place. If you want to party and be surrounded by touristy stuff, then go to San Juan. Vieques has a bioluminescent bay, which is a bay that glows in the dark...literally!! Look up Viques, you wont be dissapointed!

Why don't you just BUY the GUIDE BOOK? You can take it with you and it will tell you where to go or what to see... if you are going to spend all that money to go to P.R. then what is another 10 bucks for the book?
