the hurricane season if I'm not mistaken is from June 1st thru Nov 30th - but my husband and I went to a resort in Negril back in September of 2006 and all was fine, beautiful weather, sun, etc...a few days it rained but only for an hour or so...it was romantic....you'll have fun

August, that's when they have their independence and emancipation gala and dances, from the 1st to the 6th, there are floats, street dances culinary exhibitions art and craft fairs, art exhibitions, agricultural displays cultural displays, where blacks, chinese, jews, indians, whites show case their roots, without animosity. the whole island is a sea of colours, dance and festivities. check it out man, bless up.

Hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30. Of course, there is no guarantee that there will be any during that time frame and no guarantee there won't be any between Dec 1 and May 31. As for the thunderstorms, don't worry about that. If it rains it's more a tropical rain where it comes down in buckets for a half hour and then the sun returns. Prices are somewhat less during June - August. Regardless of when, you'll have a good time. Unless there is some specific reason for Montego Bay, I'd recommend someplace else in Jamaicamon (just my personal opinion). Montego Bay doesn't really have a city center--it's all spread out with some resorts having their own manmade private beaches. Think about Negril (if going to party) or a resort along the north coast between MoBay and Ocho Rios or near Port Antonio if going for just relaxing.

July is excellent - Reggae Sumfest. If you stay for two weeks you will also have time to visit other places and events.

January is also excellent (Jazz & Blues Festival).

Any time of year is good, but January to June/july will give you the best 'hurricane protection'. You generally only have to worry about excessive rain on a day or two (since this is the tropics thats ALWAYS a possibility).

Its not so much the hurricane itself you need to worry about if you are staying at a big hotel (since they have security it might actually be a strange but 'cool' experience and you would get a refund on your stay!). You also need to think about the damaged infrastructure for weeks after a major hurricane. You dont want to be here during the weeks after a major hit. This should be obvious actually!

I've been there twice. First time in August on a cruise ship and the second time I went in September on my own for two weeks. Had a ball. I think all year round can be fun. I just like it there period. Anytime for me.
