Best place to vacation in Cuba?

Can anyone recommend a good resort in Cuba? I'll be going in April so I have some time.

I'm looking for an all inclusive, on the beach. Preferably, I'd like to be close enough to Havana to take a day trip there.

Any advice for Cuba would be great. Thanks!

I highly suggest the Paradisus Rio de Oro The elegant hotel is located right alongside Playa Esmeralda beach, in the Natural Park of Bahía Naranjo, 5 km from Guardalavaca in the province of Holguin in the north-east of Cuba. 56 km distance from from the provincial capital and 72 km from the international airport.
We have just returned from this hotel having enjoyed 2 excellent weeks.
On first impressions the room seemed a bit dated especially the bathroom however it catered for our every need and was spotlessly clean! The beds were large and comfy. Each room has a mini bar that is restocked on a daily basis, also cable TV, coffee maker and CD player. The maid visits every day to make beds, replenish towels and toiletries.
We enjoyed the huge variety of food at the hotel. The buffet caters for all tastes with plenty to choose from at breakfast including cereals, fresh fruit, yummy cakes, bacon, fried eggs and freshly made ommlettes. The evening meal offered just as much choice with fresh meat and fish cooked infront of you to your preference, pasta, rice, freshly made ceasar salad and lots of delicious desserts! We visited all of the a la carte restaurants during our stay. We were a little disappointed with our meal at El Bohio but loved the other 3. It is a must to book a show table at the Japanese restaurant, the food and the show given by the chefs is unmissable! For lunch we ate at the beach restaurant or the pool restaurant both serving a wide selection of food with a lovely atmosphere. The staff in the each restaurant cannot do enough to ensure you have everything that you want.
Most of our days were spent at the pool, which was very quiet most of the time and very relaxing with plenty of sunbeds to go round with the cushions doubling up as floating lilos!!
We enjoyed many activites while we were in at the hotel including Tennis, kayaking, horse riding and snorkleling. But they also have many more on offer.
Check out the board outside the animation team club house for trips on offer from the hotel. We went on a very insightful trip to a fishing village with 1 of the animation team and met some local people and visited their homes. We would definatly reccommend it! The other trip that we went on was through First Choice where we visited Holguin, went on a steam train and visited a cigar factory it was a good trip to experience a bit more of Cuba's culture. A trip to Guardalavaca market on a horse drawn carriage is another must. The driver will drop you off and wait for you for an hour. An hour really is enough because the market is very small!
We took a Day tour to Havana booked at the Hotel tourist desk and just loved it!
Overall we had an excellent holiday the hotel was great and the food was fabulous. We would go back tomorrow if we could!!!

Let me see. In Cuba we have many good places. There is Soroa, Varadero, Viñales, las cuevas de Bellamar. Close to havana there are el Mégano, Tarará ( I don't know today. It was for students ).

There is a place, very close to Havana, called the Abreu Fontán, used by fidel to deport the insane patients and crminals that he sent instead of the families on the Mariel

Der Schreckliche
A very nice place is Varadero beach. It has the finest sands in the world, with shallow waters, beautiful sky. The best place for vacations.

I hope someday to be able to return.

Please, allow me to tell you a little but true story. In India, in 1940s, it was very common the have famines. The inhabitants died by dozens of hunger.

According to a British witness, he mentioned the famine to some people in an elegant club in Calcutta, and they made him shut up, telling him that for them talking about the hunger was very annoying. They didn't care if the people were dying like flies on the street

In my country, luckily, we haven't gone that far, but I see that here some people talk about how excellently they ate in my country, but whenever I have tried to explain the current situation that exists for the Cubans , they make me shut up as well

Same as the comunists do in Cuba. How sad

I heard that in the usa you could say whatever you wanted, but it looks like it is just propaganda. Nobody wants to listen

The beach in Varadero is by far the best beach on the whole island!

It is close enough for a day trip to Havana, and there a hundreds of Hotels along the Varadero Peninsula to pick from!

Varadero has a huge choice of all inclusive hotels. Nice beaches , but not the real Cuba. Varadero is two hours by taxi away from Havana (+/-130km)
Havana too has nice beaches , the Havana del Este beaches about 20 km from Central Havana. If you pay a trip for one day to Havana the best you can do is to buy an all-in tour from your tour operator or at the hotel reception desk.
Havana is a big city and must for a Cuba traveller.

Otter, Riki, and Jc22ny have given you excellent information. Varadero is closest to Havana and is a great place to stay as well.
I really don't know what else to say that's different than the others...oh except to remind you that Cuba does not accept US-based credit cards/traveller's cheques....Don't change all of your money over all at once in case you won't end up using it all. When you change your money back before going home, you could end up losing in the exchange...CUC have no value outside of Cuba which is why you'd need to change your money over before coming back home.

And........HAVE A GREAT TIME!!

The best vacation is not a resort, stay at a casa (b&B0, its wonderful. If you really want all inclusive, try Playa Ancon near Trinidad. There are 3 hotels there, its very close to Trinidad, near enough to visit Havana and cienfuego. You could also take a trip to Topes de Collantes a wonderful place in the mountains. Beach at Ancon is fantastic. You'll also meet Cubans on vacation there. Have fun. I love Cuba

Riki
As Otter posted, Varadero would be a good destination, there are dozens of excellent resorts offering countless activities and it's close enough to Havana, a "must see" to make an easy day trip. A resort I enjoyed was Brisas del Caribe. You can check the reviews on trip advisor one of the links below.
