CUBA, whats the deal with this small island?

I was a 8 year old boy during the Cuban Missile Crisis/&Block aide!
Our military leaders "wanted a WAR", and didn't get it with them! Thank GOD, as they had tactical nukes ready for our military! Yet after nearly 50 years, we keep them isolated, and off limits to us! You can go there, but only thru Mexico! We were totally embarrasseded in Viet Nam, yet, we've kissed the commies butts, and have trade with them!
But refuse Cuba the benefits of a mutual friendship. Which would help both countries economies, and have kept a tite grip on this nation, while paying them millions of $$ for the US Military base there! I just don't understand the Political/Economical side of this. We pay them, and we get nothing in return! I hope our new president changes this misalignmentment of stupidity! Castro has out lived at least 10 US presidents, who follows someones orders not to be politically correct with them! Whose running this monkey show anyway! Why not get along with them, rather than try so hard to be their enemy!

easy on who you are calling stupid there!I get riled prety easy when someone insults my country, and our people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am Canadian and travel to Cuba pretty often I was there in January and will go back to Havana in March . I agree that the Castro's have kept the country as a cult of personality and kept it in some cases from entering a western style democracy, but it does not negate the fact that Cuba is beautiful and her people and history are worth experiencing.

I think that the United States has painted itself into a corner it cannot exit without losing face.

America does business with far worse dictators and in far worse countries than Cuba.

On the paying millions for the base comment actually the lease is for about $4500 dollars per year (wikipedia) and the checks have never been cashed by the Cuban Government (except for 1) The base is another huge point of contention amongst Cubans and Americans.

I think it was a very despicable thing to do to turn GITMO into what it is today it includes Cuba in a historical event that will tarnish them but gives them no choice.

I think it is time to end the embargo but I will say this Cuba is the only Caribbean Island left that has no American influence no Burger King almost no Coca Cola and no American style slash and burn free market economy.

In some ways that is not such a bad thing to be able to experience a culture that is truly authentic and has not been changed by western investment to the extent that other Caribbean nations have been.

The Domincan Republic is open to all western investment and there are people that live in cardboard shacks there. I have seen some pretty bad Cuban dwellings but as of yet no cardboard slum's.

Makes you think sometimes

I have great respect for you, thank-you for serving our country all these years. Not a big fan of Castro, but I don't think that is what you are saying. If I understood the question, your point was, why are we putting out all this taxpayer money and yet still no progress is made. I don't like the term politically correct, I didn't understand that one, who wants to be PC with Cuba anyways? But, if only Ricky Ricardo were alive. Heres a line from one of his songs, maybe this will bring us all together. "I'm on my way to CUBA, that's where I'm going da da da da ta ta, Cuba, where wine is flowing..." I hope this has helped. :) Do you really think JFK wanted war with Cuba?

Excuse me, I am curious. Why do you want to go there, baby ?

We are escaping from cuba. I don't understand why somebody would want to go there

Besides, you don't try to be their enemy. For fidel YOU ARE THE ENEMY

Because all those OLD, ANGRY CUBAN GUYS who play dominos on Calle Ocho in Miami HATE CASTRO and they are a HUGE VOTING BLOCK so they change FLORIDA to either DEMOCRATIC or REPUBLICAN depending on which presidential candidate PANDERS TO THEM THE MOST.

If AmeriKans weren't so stupid and would take a little time to find out how EASY it is to travel to Cuba.. they would just GO THERE like the OTHER 100,000 AmeriKans a year do. I've been there 3 TIMES in the past 10 YEARS.. so it's not rocket science to get there and back.

Rick
As some other people say, they way you describe the situation in Cuba, I must say it is not a very accurate one

The problem is not the USA government exactly ( despite they handled the situation in a very inappropriate way ) . It is the comunist regime in Cuba. Luckily for the USA, Gorbachev pulverized comunism in Russia. Otherwise, today fidel would be knocking at the doors of the white house and telling Obama to leave, because he was taking charge of the USA

Oh, the no Cuban experts. Wonderful ! They just love to tell us how our country should be handled and what it is better for it.
Fantastic !

You have not seen cardboard slums, eh ? Well, if I were back in Cuba and you were there, I could show them to you.

A truly authentic culture. Hum. Our culture is not authentic. It is a wreck of what was our culture.

I have the feeling that perhaps it might be more appropriate if we could make those decisions of what is good or not for our country. I am not very sure that we need foreigners to tell us about what we should do in our country

Thanks, but no thanks

It seems that you still are a 8 y/o boy. Your statements are very naive.

According to your own statements refusing Cuba the benefits of a mutual friendship. Don't you know that big bad old fidel is a sworn enemy of the USA ?

Only thing he has wanted was to destroy the USA.

You make it look like the USA were the bad guys and fidel the good guy.

Get along with fidel, ha ! Do that and he will strip you naked

I am not going to call you stupid, because that would be offensive, obviously, but your words do not indicate a very smart understanding of the situation
