Jamaica has a colorful history. It has been controlled by several countries over the centuries and all of them have left their influence, including in their language. Christopher Columbus lived there for a while, Mick Jagger owns property there, one of the James Bond movies was filmed there. Its Prime Minister is a lady who was elected a couple of years ago. Its major newspaper is published out of Kingston (the capitol city) and is called the Gleaner. It can be accessed online and articles read. Two huge sports there are cricket and soccer. The Cricket World Cup will be held in Jamaica this summer.

I went to Jamaica in January. It's a beautiful country and I learned alot there. Porscha Simpson Miller is the President, the island has a population of 2.5 million people and has an area of 21 250 km squared (250 by 85), it is located 90 miles south of Cuba. The population is 95% black and has the 59th rated HDI in the world. The sugar and tourist industries are the main source of economy for Jamaica. The official language is English but Jamaicans often speak to each other in a very fast slang (often uncomprehensable to tourists ;) called Patois (if you ever go to the country, don't bother trying to understand what they're saying.) Jamaicans are notorious for the amount of marijuana grown and smoked, 20-40% of Jamaicans smoke marijuana, often by the 100 000 Rastafarians in the country (but don't judge too quickly if you see one.) Here's a few local customs you can do in your report too. Jamaicans (for the most part) are extremly laid back. They are very carefree and flexible (they could have five things to do and will still take time off to do whatever). They love to have fun and party. Reggae (especially dancehall reggae), is the main music in Jamaica and just about everyone likes it. Hagling is very acceptable and actually recommended in Jamaica (since most of the stores there are privatly owned.) Cricket and soccer are very popular. And show them the Jamaican hand shake (come together like your shaking their hand and then scrape your thumbs together too your left three times.) Jamaica is lovely and I recommend you go!

An island country in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba. Originally inhabited by Arawaks, it was discovered by Columbus in 1494 and settled by the Spanish in 1509. The British captured the island in 1655, and it was formally ceded to Great Britain in 1670, becoming a crown colony in 1865. Jamaica became independent in 1962. Kingston is the capital and the largest city. Population: 2,730,000.

It's a beautiful place but very poverty stricken. Here's a site for some more depth info about Jamaica including government info and info on the country in general: http://www.visitjamaica.com/about_jamaica/facts_and_figures.aspx
