From Tortola, we took a ferry to Virgin Gorda to "The Bath's".....a beautiful beach.
From St Thomas we ferried to St John. There is a National Park/beach. Great coral reef for snorkling.
It's all good! |

I have been to Cancun. It is sooo much fun and so much to do. Never been to virgin Island, but I have heard about it on the travel channel, It looks really boring. Virgin Islands you have to just stay in your resort and go in the water. But Cancun there is so much to see and do outside that you would hardly spend any time in your hotel. I always tell my friends going to Cancun not to stay at an all inclusive, since you will hardly stay at your hotel. In Cancun you can go to the Chichinitza(which are pyramids from 1000s of years ago), you go boating, snorkling, Ixcarete (which is a jungle and has a underground river where you can swim in), there is lots of night clubs, lots of reasonbly price resturants and it is pretty safe to walk around the island. |

Having been to both Cancun and the US Virgin Islands - here's my assestment: Cancun is a big party, the Virgin Islands are much more tranquil and laid back. Use those thoughts to try to decide what would be the best place for you to go.
The US Virgin Islands are nice becasue you don't need a passport if a US Citizen coming from a US location and they use US money so you don't need to do currency conversions in your head - the last thing you want to have to do on vacation is think!
That being said, I love St John. The island is mostly a national park so it is very undeveloped and has some beautiful unspoiled beaches. It's pricey to stay there, but you can stay on St Thomas and take the ferry over to St John at least once during your stay. There is also very little nightlife in St John, so if you are looking for that, I'd also suggestion staying on St Thomas - much more to do there in the way of shopping, restaurants, nightlife, etc. I've also heard St Croix is nice too, but I've never been there.
Have fun! |

We have stayed in St. Thomas and St. John. We prefer St. John. So i will talk about that island. It's more laid back and it's an island to explore. Everything is" Island Time" We always rent a jeep and go to all the beaches. It's different than Cancun, in the sense all the resorts line the beaches of Cancun. St. John is 75% government park and you can't build on the beaches. There are only two big hotels on the beach. Caneel Bay and Westin.
When we go to St John, we rent a house/villa with a pool and hot tub. There is not much nightlife in St. John. We have breakfast at the villa and pack some snacks and drinks for the beach. We have dinner out every night. They have very good restaurants and some have bands to entertain you. Very Caribbean.
St Thomas is a ferry ride away and we usually go for the day and shop and have lunch. I like St Thomas but St John is my favorite. I would buy a house there if I could afford it. $1 million for a 2 bedroom.
Here is a great website for places to stay in the USV.
