San Juan is divided in areas such as Santurce, Condado, Mira Mar, Rio Piedras, Hato Rey, Puerto Nuevo and also it is part of the Metro Area. Now if you speak of Old San Juan where there are apartments and homes to buy, or rent then they are expensive. Old San Juan is more expensive than the other areas that compose the San Juan area as mentioned above. But with the sales Tax in, things are not that cheap no more. We have state and city tax to pay. The prices went up in the past year to now and are project to keep rising. Santurce, Puerto Nuevo and Hato Rey is cheaper than Rio Piedras, Mira Mar and the most expensive is Condado. |

Most of the areas in San Juan, are tourism area. They have nice hotel and beach near hotels, In San Juan especially they
have a lot of American people living there. So they speak English in that area. Also Spanish. They have nice apartments and houses but more expensive in that area that in the country area.At night they have nice clubs to go and restaurants. Of course they have for younger and older crowd in different areas. The area were the young people hang out is very Loud at night but they have Good music. They play wrap, salsa, merengue, bachata,Reggeton and other music from the island even Jamaican Music.I went on vacation an have a good time. They have a lot of places to see but get a tour guide and will be much better.I hope you have a good time if you come. |

It's very glamorous and luxurious-IF you have money. However if you are a normal person trying to live a normal life, then it's pretty normal.
Just get an education and a good job and you should be great not only in San Juan, but in all PR.
And in San Juan there are lots of tourists so if that doesn't bother you, even better!
Good luck! |

People are nice. Usually they tend to keep distance from unknown people, or looking strange. Not that they are unfriendly, is just "precaution". And a warning: cops there dislike disheveled and punk rock looking young guys with spikes on their heads. They can be quite "unfriendly" with them. However, if you are courteous and "humble" [don't use the USA young people's "arrogant sneering", they can be rough], they can be then respectful and courteous with you. And finally, don't demand service with roughness. They will not pay attention to you. I know the place. I know the folks there now that am living in cold and freezing USA. I have experience. |
