You can use USD in Cuba but not advisable as a few have already mentioned. It won't be worth it as you will get charged a fee of at least 10% for exchanging USD to CUC...but there is no charge for changing CAD, UK pounds, Sterling, Euros (or even Mexican pesos).
What is NOT allowed:
Credit cards that are US-based are NOT accepted AT ALL...but non-US credit cards are accepted and even cash advances can be made on the cards in Cuba (ATMs as well depending on the communication system of the day)...charges will be made in US dollars though (but not penalty fee for that as was mentioned).
Travelers' cheques are also allowed, but again, not US-based cheques. |

Cuba discontinued use of the US dollar some years ago. You'll have to use convertible pesos or Cuban pesos. |

Take Mexican pesos. Much better than US dlls.
You will get a 10% tax when you exchange your us dls for CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso).
You can not use USA credit cards either. |

The only currencies that can be used in Cuba are Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC), Cuban National Pesos and in some areas Euros.
Other currencies can be exchanged for CUC - but the US dollar suffers an extra 10% tax on top of the exchange commission (~3% - 4%). Other currencies do not suffer the 10%.
[Curiously, non-US credit cards are charged in US dollars - but they don't suffer the 10% penalty.] |

Yes but don't you will pay a penalty. Take Cdn. Sterling, Euros any hard currency except U.S. If you take traveller's cheques be sure they aren't drawn on an American bank or are American express; the same goes for credit cards. |

Hmmm. That used to be true. However, I think you might be better off using Euros these days. The dollar trading rate is pretty low at the moment. |
