Can someone please help me find a way to go from Mexico to Bahamas WITHOUT going through the US?

We are meeting my sister and family in the Bahamas for Christmas. I live in Mexico. All US and Mexican airlines connect through Miami to reach Freeport, but since my Mexican boyfriend does not have a US visa, and they have eliminated the transit visa option, we have to find a way there without going through the US. Mexican airlines can get him to Cuba, but we cannot find flights from Cuba to Bahamas. We would very much appreciate any concrete recommendations you might have. Thanks!

Sorry, Charlie, but if you read the first paragraph of that same page, you'll read this:

The programs, known as the Transit Without Visa program (TWOV) and the International-to-International transit program (ITI), have been suspended. The action takes effect at 11:00 a.m., Saturday August 2, 2003. (Note: All times are U.S. EDT). This action does not affect U.S. citizens or citizens from visa waiver countries.

I wish you were right!

The "L" Word
Cubana and Bahamasair both do offer direct flights to Nassau from Havana. Wheras Cubana's safety record is not one of the best in the world, Bahamasair has a good record.

In order to transit the US, your boyfriend WILL NEED a transit visa. It costs $100 and there is no guarantee he will be granted it. Prior to 9/11 most nationalities were allowed to transfer at U.S. airports without a trabist visa. The visa requirement is one reason Iberia Airlines disbanded their Miami hub (where many Latin American nationalities use to connect onto their flights to Madrid).

Cubana flies Havana to Nassau.

Your boyfriend can go to the American Consulate and get a transit visa. This is a visa that allows him to travel through the US. It is different from the TWOV.

Their are flight from Cuba to Montego Bay Jamaica and their are about four flight from Montego Bay to Nassau Bahamas.
try this.

Mexico
Havana
Montego Bay
Nassau
Free port.

You May have to Stay in Montego Bay over night. The Gloriana Hotel is close to the Air Port and their are also lots of guest house close to the Air Port in Montego Bay,

there are flights from Cuba to the Bahamas. so fly to Cuba. You haven't looked around very much. It is pretty expensive to fly from Mexico to the Bahamas that way. Let the one guy travel alone

Charlie
I do not believe he needs a visa. The International to international transit program allows foreign nationals to travel through the U.S. without a visa if they stop at only ONE airport and do not leave the airport lounge during that stop. See the webpage below and read the 3rd paragraph up from the bottom. The program that was dropped is the one that allowed foreign nationals up to 72 hrs to pass through the U.S. without a visa. You can also call the airline to confirm this info.

You can hop through one or more of Belize, Dominican Republic, Grand Cayman and/or, Jamaica.

Alternatively, you can call one of the airlines directly and they can tell you how to do it. American Airlines has near complete service in the Carribean. Lacsa (and I think Air Taca) both fly to the Cayman Islands from Belize (and maybe Mexico too?) which can then take you to the Bahamas or into Jamaica, then the Bahamas.

I'm sorry; but I don't know. GOOD LUCK.
