Can someone tell me the differences between Nassau and Freeport Bahamas? |
We like the sound of Atlantis for our kids 5 and 8, but is Freeport better? I don't know much about either one, except it sounds like Nassau is busier/more populated? |

No Freeport is not better than staying at Atlantis. You can be bored in Freeport after the first day. At Atlantis there is enough entertainment for a few days.
Nassau is the nations capitol. The island is New Providence. Freeport is on an island called Grand Bahama. The city of Nassau is way more urban. Atlantis is located on an adjoining island called Paradise Island. That area is very much geared toward tourism. There are many multi-million $ vacation homes on Paradise Island. You have less exposure to the Bahamian locals outside of resort employees on Paradise Island. Freeport is a very lazy , quiet,laid-back city compared to Nassau.
To sum it up Atlantis is a better vacation destination for a family. You just may not want to cross off of Paradise Island into Nassau for much. |

The difference is Nassau is the capital of The Bahamas which is about 35 minutes from Florida. It is the most populated of the two and is smaller in size. Freeport is also develop but is very big and is more closer to Florida than Nassau. I personally think that Freeport is more expensive than Nassau and Nassau you have more choices of accommodation. So if you feel like travelling to Florida from either place it is easily possible to do it by plane from any one of these places, but with Freeport you can also go to Florida by a ship, which travels back and forth each day. This ship you can bring anything back on it to Freeport. Both Nassau and Freeport has there on strong point, Freeport is more consider to be like America, with the wide roads and other similarities, but without the crowd of people and is more quieter. |

I have been to Paradise Island twice. Loved it both times. Instead of staying at Atlantis, check out Comfort Suites Paradise Island. You can stay there and still have full use of Atlantis facilities. Alot cheaper. Lots of restaurants on property, don't ever have to leave. I have stayed at Atlantis and Comfort Suites. If I go again, I will go back to Comfort Suites. You are just in your room to sleep and shower anyway. No need to spend the extra money for Atlantis rooms. |

I went on a cruise with my parents when I was 12 (about 15 years ago now, gulp) and we stopped at both Freeport & Nassua. I can't remember much about freeport, but even at 12 I remember liking Nassua better. They had 'coral world' which is kind of like their own little sea world.. which I thought was super cool at the time... and I just remember seeing gardens and stuff in freeport (boring by kids standards). Since then, now being an adult... I went back to Nassua with some friends in April 05. I loved Nassua. Totally safe... so much stuff to do! Atlantis is awesome (might have even put 'coral world' out of business for all I know...lol). Overall.. Nassua is hands down the best choice. So much to do there!! |

Nassau is the Capital city on Providence Island and it is busier and more populated. The beaches are on the main island and a little offshore island called Paradise Island. You get there by a car over a bridge.
Freeport is on a different island called Lucaya. It is far less populated. It too has beautiful beaches, hotels and casinos.
It is more modern while Nassau (downtown on Bay Street) is more Colonial.
I think for your family you would be happier and safer in Freeport. |

I disagree with Shintzzz, I prefer Nassau over Freeport, for most of the reasons the others listed. |
