hey, just been to cuba. forget about us currency on the island. you'll get a 10% penalty for bringing dollars and a dollar only pays 0.89 peso convertible (cuc). over all, you'll only get about 0.80 cuc for one dollar. the euro will pay 1.08 cuc - no penalty for bringing euros. so bring euros. and make sure you don't run out of cash. there are some atm that accept visa, but they are hard to find. a cash advance on your credit card in a casa de cambio will cost you 12% comission, plus the fees your card company or bank deducts. e-mail for further information on cuba.

First of all, are you an American citizen? And, if so, you are banned from even going to Cuba (not that that is fair...) due to the trade embargo against Cuba mainly due to the current Cuban immigrants protesting their former government. If you get caught by the US government traveling to Cuba, you can be fined up to $60,000. Check out the US Government's website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1097.html

As far as US currency, it definitely can NOT be used in Cuba and would also bring about multiple problems. See the following article:

Hi, I'm British and I met plenty of Americans when I was studying in Havana who were on holiday from all walks of life. Don't worry about what your government says, there are ways of getting to Cuba and it is well worth it. Of all the foreign nationals that visit Cubans are most interested in getting to know the Americans. The culture and the country will blow your mind, and you will see the the US embargo is completely pointless.

With regards the dollars. Yes, take loads. Two currencies exist side by side Dollars/Pesos. You can only get Cuban pesos in Cuba by changing american dollars to get them. But you can buy everything you need with dollars and the Cubans really like to get paid in dollars even when it would be normal to pay them in pesos. They can go to the dollar shops and buy such luxuries as toilet paper and soap.

absolutely, Cuba loves hard currency and U.S. dollars are very desireable there.................

I thought I read something recently about US currency in Cuba.

I found the following information on currency regulations:

<Beginning in November 2004, the U.S. dollar is no longer accepted for commercial transactions. The Cuban government now requires the use of convertible Cuban pesos ("chavitos") for all transactions.>

American Citizens are not allowed in CUBA, & so the American Dollar

Dude, you can use American dollars everywhere, except France.

awebberuk
No. There is no exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). You also can't use any credit cards that are associated with an American bank.
