Can you use american money over there or do you need travelers checks?

The U.S. dollar is accepted in most tourist areas in the Dominican Republic. Otherwise, the Dominican peso is the official currency.

If you find an establishment that doesn't accept american dollars, you can just take dominican pesos out of any ATM (they are plentiful) using your american ATM card. Stay away from traveller's cheques - they're a big hassle.

I wouldn't bring Travelers checks, if you find a place to cash they in they will charge you more money on your exchange, they are a safe way to travel with your money, but I don't find it worth it on the exchange.

=)

Hi, you can use cash money and travelers checks, the last are
generally accepted in shops and hotels. But when you pay with trav.checks you must have always your passport with you
to identify you and your signature, and you MUST ask the rate they will charge you! The best is to have some cash money and to have some Travel Checks so if you spend all your cash money, you still have money to pay at the airport
(20US) have a nice holiday...

Us dollars are accepted everywhere and if the don't you can easily find a bank and change it to pesos, so if possible bring dollars and Dominican pesos.

you can probably do one of those money exchange things at a bank over there where you give them american money and they give you an equil amount in their money
