Carribean Vacation Suggestions?

My husband and I are looking to take a vacation for as cheap as possible. I would like to go somewhere in the carribean. I know Mexico is cheap but we don't have passports and that is an extra $200 added to the cost of our trip (if we had no choice then we would obviously get them). I have checked in to San Juan and that seemed pretty reasonable with our flight costing about $350-$400 per person. We are coming from MN so we would like to go in Jan or Feb but want to make sure the water is still going to be pretty and all. We went to Hawaii last Dec and the water was all muddy and it was rainy (should have done better research) I am looking for recommendations for a good carribean vacation at a reasonable price. Thanks!

I was gonna say Mexico is very cheap. I went to Haiti, Jamaica, and Bahamas. I heard Aruba is nice. Not sure which places require a passport. Not an Island but I love Montreal, Canada and you don't need a passport there yet.

If you are from the US, the only places you can go in the caribbean without a passport are to Puerto Rico & the USVI. They aren't dirt cheap, but they are reasonably priced & you can feel more safe there. They are US territories so water & food are safe to consume also. I definitely reccomend Puerto Rico. In January & February the weather will be beautiful. It will be in the mid 80's & probably no or little rain. In the caribbean you only need to worry about hurricane season & that is over in November.

Puerto Rico is a great vacation, but you need to plan ahead so you can get the most out of it. PR has a ton of things to do & see. First of all San Juan is the big city & tourist area. You will most likely stay there, although you dont have to b/c there are nice places outside of San Juan. Well in San Juan you will need to see Old San Juan & el Morro Fort. They are historical & beautiful & not to be missed. Also San Juan has tons of restaurants, shopping, casinos, nightlife & more. You can also visit the Bacardi Factory for a tour, its just a ferry ride away in Catano. Now the beaches in San Juan are nice, kind of like Miami beach, but they definiely aren't the best on the island. You can go to Isla Verde beach in San Juan, but make a trip to Vieques or Culebra island if you can (by ferry), because they have gorgeous white sand & crystal clear water. (Or if you stay at El Conquistador resort in Fajardo, they have there own private island called Palomino). Now I suggest renting a car or taking bus tours & go other places like El Yunque Rain Forest. You can walk the trails & swim in the waterfalls. You can also got to the worlds largest radio telescope in Arecibo & the beautiful Rio Camuy Caves. Check out the links below for more ideas. Have fun :)

If you are not planning to get a passport, you are a little limited. Puerto Rico might be the place for you. In most of the other places you are going to need a passport.

San Juan is probably cheapest. Us Virgin islands are beautiful. Love St. Thomas & St Croix. Weather & water shld be lovely late Jan-Feb. (we were there mid Feb-just gorgeous!) Bahama's may be too chilly then-especially water. Try cheapcarribean, com get good info & deals.
F.Y.I :You do need a passport for Canada as of July '08. Good luck!
