Could Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic achieve a Manhattan-like skyline by 2050?

Do you think they can do it?

Not like Manhattan, but I could see them with a San Juan-like skyline. There's far too much corruption, red-tape, and kickbacks involved with development in the Dominican Republic, as well as an economy that can't sustain that development presently.

San Juan on the other hand, with its lesser amount of red-tape and corruption, as well with its more developed economy, I could see a Manhattan-like skyline by 2050.

Highly unlikely. Due to their hurricane-prone location and also the lack of strongly enforced building codes like those found in the U.S.A. Santo Domingo will not have a skyline like that of Manhattan ever. Also, Manhattan is pure bedrock, whereas Santo Domingo was constructed from marshland surrounding the Ozama River. Skyscrapers more than 50 stories high would be prone to collapse without a solid foundation.

San Juan's skyline grew due to heavy amount of financial and technical help that was a result of Operation Bootstrap, a project of the U.S. federal government and private investments to bolster the island's economy and infrastructure. Due to stable government free of coup d'etats and political assassinations, Puerto Rico was seen as a safe place to develop high rise real estate because many American investors were not fearful that a revolution that took over Cuba in 1959 would ever take over the island. Santo Domingo has a long way to go before foreign investors will pour money to such high-rise real estate projects.
