There are many reasons but I think I personally think the main one is the British Privy Council in London. They keep trying to frustrate the Governments of the Caribbean in being able to deal with criminals. First they rule one way. Then some of the criminals appeal to the Privy Council and then the Council will reverse-- itself so that the Criminal cannot be dealt with by the law. Then the council will take soo long to render a ruling that the criminal gets off easy after 5 years.
The only--- time I saw a lull in criminal activity was when the Government put down its foot and executed 9 members of a murderous gang over a weekend. After that- all the criminals were soo shocked they carefully evaluated everything they did for a while. But once the Privy council started saying that the government could no longer keep capital punishment the criminals feel invincible. They feel like they could go commit a bunch of outragous crimes then get off easy in jail getting 3 square meals a day, somewhere to kick up their foot and they don't even have to work for it.
Jamaica is having a similar problem but there is something new happening there which is called "Jungle Justice" that is where a mob of people might beat a suspect to death because they feel the law courts or the Privy Council will not properly administer any form of justice on the criminal. So mobs of citizens have started do this on their own in Jamaica. They getting real bold up in Jamaica with their Criminals.
The only thing that seems certain to me is those criminals are affaird of paying for crimes with their own lives. |

firstly allot of criminals are getting deported back from the states, canada, an england an coming back to trinidad with their nasty ways of being a thief, rapist, an all the other crimes it have out there. the police corrupt, allot of people from south america an wherever coming into trinidad illegally by boat from cedros, they say it have human trafficking but i think more people bring in the drugs from south america than trinidadians being sold into the slave trade drugs, gang an some young fellas doh want to do one thing with lives they only want to thief an rob innocent people of trinidad an tobago. but hopefully we get it right soon a something gets done |

truth is the police using 1812 methods and criminals using 2020 methods.
Then again we have some people who complain about crime everyday, but still do things like throw trash out their window drive on the shoulder.
Yes it may seem to be trivial compared to murder but yuh still breaking the law. Driving on the shoulder of the road today..... manslaughter tomorrow, it just grows from one to the next because people feel that they can get away with it.
Lets us not forget that we have a Min. of National Security who has no clue of what to do but hire "consultants".
One of the solutions was offered earlier ...patrols. Time to move POLICE officers out of the office and put them to do POLICE work. Claims that there is a shortage is because too many POLICE officers are doing what can be done by civilians. Why must a POLICE officer be doing payrolls and accounts, why can't he/she be on the streets.
The powers that be lack the brain power and the balls to get cracking. No one wants to upset the old boys club. |

i agree with the 1st three answers. things are out of hand here, because our government can't control anything that is going on here. it takes forever to reach the privy counsel. they can't find the criminals and other excuses. makes you wonder. |

I totally agree witht the first answer. We should replace the privy council with our own court.
Additionally, drug trading is causing alot of crime. It could be reduced if the govt buy a working radar system, and some armed patrol boats for the coast guard.
The police service has a lack of vehicles (well at least in south) and some areas dont have a police station. I not sure if DNA implemented yet, but if not then thats another reason, because DNA could really help solve crimes.
Mainly, crime is spiraling out of control because the govt isnt doing much to help the situation.

Micheal_Parker71 has a good point. Plenty people are affraid to be witnesses because witness protection sucks. There are so many stories in the news about state witnesses getting murdered, so who would want to be one? Without witnesses stepping up, crimes are left unsolved, and criminals are left out of jail, roaming the streets, commiting more crimes. |

The Privy Council sounds like a big part of the problem. However, as an American that has been to Trinidad, and was originally from Barbados, it seems the problem is a lack of a proper police force.
-The police in Trinidad don't do patrols. They don't walk a beat around the neighborhoods, they stand in one place. That's stupid. Patrols make it harder for criminals to conduct their business. It's predictable where the police will be.
-The police do not monitor traffic. There are no speed traps. The roads are virtually lawless.
-I will assume the investigative skills of the Trinidadian police are horrible.
-I was watching Caribbean Cops on TruTV. The cops sat down and watched half-naked women by their car during Carnival instead of doing their job and watching out for criminals. Um...that's not good.
It's pretty bad when a person that's not a cop can tell that the police in Trinidad are not doing a good job. |

The problem can be summed up in one phrase: "Lack of political will".
The justice system needs overhaul so that witnesses can be protected, so that criminals are brought to justice quickly.
The police service needs overhaul so that police are properly trained and equipped and corrupt officers dealt with.
The whole society has to learn that lawlessness cannot be tolerated, condoned and even encouraged in a civilised society. The crazy driving on the roads, littering, the accepted practice of "greasing a hand". All that nonsense has to stop.
Young people have to learn that the only way to success is hard work and discipline. Unfortunately the government itself condones slackness with make work programmes where people get paid handsomely for doing nothing. |
