I can think of 4 incidents between December 2005 and now.

1. 2 in St Elizabeth
2. 3 in Kingston
3. Group from cruise ship visiting plantation
4. 4 tourists in St James

......robbed that is. I also recall a man found dead in his hotel room but I can't recall if it was 2005 or 2006. Foul play was suspected.

Pleae don't let that stop you from going to Jamaica. Crime exists in EVERY country.

I can tell you I have been living here all my life and nothing happened to me. Note - I am not saying we don't have crime. It's a very serious issue that needs to be addressed. However, you will not be safe anywhere in this world. Crime is everywhere. Again all you need to do is use your common sense. Don't go off in strange places, etc, especially in a country you are not familiar with. There are lots and lots people that visited this country and left without an incident happening to them. Just remeber 1 thing - if you are looking for trouble, you are going to find trouble. Point - Take Natalee Holloway, the girl that disappeared in Aruba - do you believe if she did not decide to wander away from her group with two guys she knew nothing about, she would still be alive today? Use Common sense - you can't take things for granted, and at the same time you cannot live in fear.

use common sense and you will avoid it. I found myself in the middle of about 20 and I hate to say it shady jamaicans and they full well knew I had several hundred U.S dollars in cash on me. I used common sense respected them and in turn recieved the same back.

P.S - I'm also 6'5" and 400lbs think that helped a little but I'm also very street wise and they all had switch blades.

As a tourist u will be very safe. i.e. Around the resort areas or designated attractions etc. Once u decide to venture off on your own you will be very careful. Most violence are poverty related and occur mostly in the inner city areas. The stats given by the first answer seem accurate, the tourist incidents are very low and it is mostly minor theft.
Advice: its good to venture out and experience the real country but watch your belongings esp. in crowded areas for pick pockets. Also, if possible, try to blend in. :)

Why cant u think of a posive question,me personally, the biggest crime i`ve seen is the poverty that the government condones.I`ve seen more violent crime in your country so there may be a danger u will bring crime to the island or yr negative attitudes will!Focus on the good things not the negative

Put it this way, there is no where on this earth that is safe. You just have to be cautious and use common sense. I visit Jamaica 4 times last year and I really enjoy it.
