Cuba Vacation (Hurricanes)?

My girlfriend and I were planning a trip to Cuba this boxing day, we were told from some friends that hurricanes have destroyed a lot of the beaches/resorts down there and that they were not telling visitors until they arrived... is there any truth to this? Anyone know where I can find more information?

Thanks.

Yes, the resorts have been worked on as soon as the hurricanes were over. I have friends that are working at resorts in one area of Cuba. There had been slight damages in some areas...some causeways were damaged as well. But those were worked on immediately after.

Every resort is in good order. If any have been damaged from hurricane paloma, they would have been worked on by and fixed...or at the very least being worked on. In fact, the travel agents will be up on the damages and the resorts are not that deceptive. If you're going to a good quality resort, there will be a heads up for the travellers.

If you tell us which area you're going to, that will give us a better idea of hurricane effects.

As Riki said, check the tripadvisor website. There are information and forums for each area and hotel.

But you will enjoy yourselves in Cuba.

Most everything is just fine, the resorts have been fixed up and you should have no problems. For up to date information, not from the government but from tourists like yourself you can check the reviews for your resort on trip advisor. See below.

Almost everything in Cuba is built from solid concrete. The only damage after a hurricane is that some palm trees fall down. Hurricanes are done by November. The hotels and guest houses in Varadero are either concrete or stone. Havana is all bricks and concrete. Even boats in Cuba are made from concrete. The only thing not made from concrete is bicycles. Any Cuban package holiday will be OK; they don't mess with tourists.

Where in Cuba are you intending to go?
Almost all damage to hotels/resort from the hurricanes are fixed. Of course there are some areas (Holguin and Pinar del Rio p.a.) where you will still see damaged nature but thats it ... for tourist areas that will say.
Varadero for example is just the same as it was the last years.

Just go there and don't worry

When going to Cuba, you can contact the company you booked with and see if there is any recent damage to the hotel. The only problem is, unless there is substantial damage and a threat to your safety, they will usually not refund you yuor money and you have to go anyways. Based on this, I suggest you just go, have a good time and not worry about it. A vacation is only what you make of it, and a few broken palm trees should not ruin your time.

Are you Americans? If so, I hate to break it to you, but you cannot go there. Americans have not been permitted there for about 50 years. Not tourists at least.

So far as information goes, there isn't much. They do not allow their citizens much in the way of technology. So no websites, no digital cameras, no computers. They just started allowing cell phones one year ago.

If you're Brit's or Aussie's, I do not know your rules.
