Cuba has the best health care in the Americas?

Michel* Moors latest movie makes it seem so.

Actually they do have a very high quality healthcare system. It is free for everyone and people are looked after right away. I personally know Cubans who are in the health profession, mainstream and alternative medicine. There are natural health remedies as well that are produced in Cuba and are used here in North America...and are very successful in treating blood pressure and cholesterol problems (which is a product our clinic has been using for many years successfully -- is mentioned in wikipedia).

They also have strong medical research programs as well.
Also, they are ahead in producing new medical treatments, vaccines, etc. and have strong and successful surgeons.
Interestingly, there are many from North America who have actually gone to Cuba to get root canals done because the dental work was premium work and they haven't had any problems since.

But in regards to the way there are differences in treatment to various groups of people in Cuba, well, I'm not one to argue that point. But biased treatments do happen in countries all around the world...even in the most affluential countries.

The health care that is available in Cuba is available freely to everyone, including visitors, and is of very high quality, but there is a great shortage of supplies including medications, medical instruments, diabetic supplies, cancer treatments, etc. If there could be a balance between the resources available in the US and the caring and accessibility and excellence available in Cuba, maybe that would be the best of both worlds .... hmmm ... Canada, maybe?

That may be a bit of a stretch however Cuban doctors are well respected around the world. It's an excellent question and there is lots of info available on the net. Take a look at the sites below, they it make for very interesting reading.

There isn't an easy yes or no answer to this question. For one thing, it depends on how you define "the best in the Americas." And keep in mind that Cuba isn't the only country in the Western Hemisphere with a nationalized system of health care--Canada has one as well.

From an article in the Harvard Public Health Review (linked below): "And herein lies the paradox of Cuba's health care system: because Cuba has so few resources, prevention has become the only affordable means of keeping its population healthy."

Michael Moore isn't the only one with praise for the Cuban health care system. For more about this, read the wikipedia entry (linked below -- there is also a section listing the
criticisms of Cuba's health system). Cuba does seem to be honestly committed to maintaining the health of its citizens. Can the same be said about the United States?

It's one of the best places apart from Canada, if you are poor.

mazp66
It is an Alternative Medicine. the healthcare system covers every cuban citizen, but of course it misses some key technology due to the embargo imposed by the U.S. on the island.

Moore is an extreme left wing idiot.
