We are a combination of different cultures, basically from spain, descendants of african slaves and mulatos ( combination of both ).
Our meals are basically from europe. Beans, chick peas, pork from spain. Vegetables from the africans
We love sports, music, dance. We had a great love for boxing and baseball since the colony.
We have had great physicians, like Dr JoaquÃn Abarrán, Dr Carlos Juan Finlay , and Aangel AballÃ
National holidays:
fidel eliminated the 20 may, which was the date of our independence and replaced it with his own days, celebrating his revolution
Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba in 1492 and claimed it for the Spanish crown. Later, governor Diego Velazquez founded the cities of baracoa, Santiago de Cuba, and others, especially in the Easter zone of the island.
We were a Spanish colony for 4 centuries. Spain kept a tight monopoly of the commerce, forbidding to trade with any other country except Spain, but many cities traded with contraband despite the order
It was in the XIX century when the struggle for independence began. The 10 October 1868 was the first event under Carlos Manuel de Cespedes. After 10 years, a truce was made.
Later, the war went on, until in 1898 the USA invaded Cuba and defeated Spain. Finally, in 1902 we achieved our Independence
After that, we were a republic, with sometimes a dictator, but basically we were a democratic republic until fidel, his brother, and their followers defeated president Batista by force and established a comunist dictatorship, ruthlessly eliminating every possible opposition. Many people have been killed, tortured, deported, or put in jail and many more have escaped on rafts or boats, risking their lives
From that moment on the struggle almost stopped, but recently courageous people, like the Ladies in White, defying the brutal repression, protest peacefully against the repression. The fight goes on ! |

Cuba was discovered by Christopher Columbus in his first trip. He named it Juana for the prince Don Juan, but it didn't stay
We were a Spanish colony for three centuries. Our position in the Caribbean sea gave us a strategic location.
In the XIX century, africans were brought to work as slaves in the cane fields.
Until the XIX century, when the ideas of independence arrived. We began to fight for our independence the 10 October 1868. There was a truce, but still the war continued
In 1895, there was an attempt to carry the war to the west. In 1898, the warship Maine exploded in Havana harbor. The USA blamed Spain and declared war.
Cuba was administrated by the USA until the 20 may 1902, when we declared our independence
Bad news, the USA added the Platt amendment that gave them the permission to intervene in Cuba whenever they wanted
Then, with the liberation of the slaves and immigration of chinese, arabs, spaniards, and other people, our population became very varied
We were a republic, more or less democratic , with some dictators, until in 1959 fidel came, defeated president Batista and seized power.
He promised free elections, but he forgot and we are still waiting for them
From that moment on, we are a dictatorship ruled with an iron fist that tolerates no opposition, or other opinions.
fidel has shot, killed, tortured, and deported all the opposition.
Many people has escaped on primitive rafts, risking their lives
And I get thumbs down. Some people don't like what I say, despite being the truth |

There are many good answers and I don't wish to repeat it.
But I would like to say just two words.
The expression "neocolony" is used by the comunists. I don't think is appropriate that non Cubans say that we were this or that.
That is our prerogative
Also, saying that the struggle for freedom ended with fidel's seize of power. That is totally mistaken.
That only marked the last and more recent stage of our fight for freedom |

The Cuban culture is mixed. The origins of the population include Spanish (over 35%), African (over 10%), and mixed Spanish-African (over 50%).
Now 65.05% European (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese), 10.08% West African, 23.84% Mulatto/Mestizo, 1.03% Chinese.
Cubans love sports such as baseball, basketball, volleyball, cricket, and athletics, such as amateur boxing too.
There is the love of music and the main/basic style is Son. From this, many styles of music are formed such as salsa, rumba, mambo, cha-cha-cha.
African and/or TaÃno origins are noted in Cuban music, as well as European.
Art, literature, and dance are very popular in Cuba...such great talent.
Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Spanish and Caribbean cuisines. Cuban recipes share spices and techniques with Spanish cooking, with some Caribbean influence in spice and flavor. But now with the food rationing, this has restricted many dishes.
The typical meal could consist of plantains, black beans and rice, ropa vieja (shredded beef), Cuban bread, pork with onions, and tropical fruits. Black beans and rice, referred to as Platillo Moros y Cristianos (or moros for short), and plantains are staples of the Cuban diet. Many of the meat dishes are cooked slowly with light sauces. Garlic, cumin, oregano and bay leaves are the dominant spices.
Cuba's major exports are sugar, nickel, tobacco, fish, medical products, citrus, and coffee; imports include food, fuel, clothing, and machinery.
As you would know from your family, Cubans are extremely warm and hospitable people and value family ties.
The Cuban people are so genuine; their idiosyncrasy took root in themselves since the birth of their genes. There are countless qualities characterizing the sons of this land, they are enterprising, optimist, hospitable, talkative, modest and charismatic people.
Cuban women have made enormous strides since 1959 even though macho traditions continue. The Cuban Women’s Federation (FMC) is one of the country’s largest, best organized ‘mass organizations’ and claims to represent 84% of all women.
The Family Code passed in 1975 gave Cuban men and women equal rights and responsibilities for child rearing, education and housework.
Women now make up 43% of the workforce compared to 20% before the Revolution. More than 60% of scientific/technical workers are women and they are also the majority in healthcare and education.
There is so much more............
This is a historical summary:
On October 27, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the Cuban archipelago during his initial voyage to the New World. Between 1511 and 1515, Diego Velázquez led the Spanish colonization of the island and founded the country’s first seven townships: Baracoa, Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba, SantÃsima Trinidad, Sancti SpÃritus, Santa MarÃa del Puerto del PrÃncipe (Camagüey) and San Cristóbal de La Habana (Havana). Spanish domination lasted four centuries and ended with the country’s military occupation by the United States in 1898, which continued until 1902 when a neocolonial republic was established. The island’s history has been marked by repeated struggles for independence. The first was on October 10, 1868; the last began on July 26, 1953 with the attack on the Moncada Garrison led by Fidel Castro. This revolution culminated in the establishment of the current republic on January 1, 1959.
The national emblems are:
Flower: the butterfly jasmine, a white jasmine with an exquisite scent
Bird: the trogon (tocororo in Spanish), an endemic species whose plumage is the colors of the Cuban flag.
Tree: royal palm, seen on the national shield and a familiar element of the Cuban landscape.
National holidays:
January 1: Liberation Day. Anniversary of the Triumph of the Revolution
May 1: International Workers’ Day
July 25, 26 and 27: Festivities for the Day of National Rebellion
October 10: Anniversary of the beginning of the Independence Wars
December 25: Christmas Day
Cuba has produced major international figures in literature and fine arts, film, ballet, modern dance and theatre. The country is also renowned for its original rhythms such as the danzón, son, bolero, mambo, cha-cha-cha and more. Cuba’s prestigious cultural events attract international celebrities in dance, music, theatre and other arts. Among these events are the Casa de las Américas literary contest, the Havana International Ballet Festival, the Festival of New Latin American Cinema and the International Jazz Festival.
The quality of Cuban rum is recognized internationally and comes in four distillations: refined, white, gold and aged. Gold and aged rums are better for drinking straight, while white rum (carta blanca or carta plata) is best for cocktails. Several of the world’s most famous rum cocktails are Cuban, and are served in most bars around the globe. Drinks include the Cuba libre, the mojito, the daiquiri, the Cubanito and the saoco.
Hopefully this brief rundown gives you an idea. |
