Cuba hands down. For one, it's cleaner and MUCH SAFER there. Most people I know who go to the DR come back sick with major stuff...but not with Cuba. I've never had a problem.

BUT Cuba is GORGEOUS! Plus, Cubans are warm and hospitable beyond words. This is the kind of quality that will make your vacation memorable and enjoyable. Accomodations are clean and beautiful as well. If you want luxury, you can get it but it all depends where you book...like anywhere else in the world you'd book.

But I do know the DR is beautiful too. Yet, many who've been to Cuba say they wouldn't want to go anywhere else after. There is something about Cuba and the Cuban people that just draws you back.

So I suggest Cuba.

i live in dominican republic and been to cuba...
there is alot to do here, rock climbing, beaches, dune buggy adventures, 4wheelers, jetski, horseback riding, clubs, fast food,
hiking, swin with dolphins, i mean tons of stuff!
i didnt go to cuba as a tourist but the culture is so cool there...
old buildings, ride around in a 50s chevrolet taxi, beaches, beautiful women to glance at.. (yes more beautiful than dominicans)
history, clean, everyone is educated....
up to you... i would pick either...

I've been to the Dominican Republic only once and to Cuba, well my 11th visit will be this Thursday! :) Both are beautiful countries with amazing beaches which is really I want in a vacation. The Dominican has much better food, both quality and selection so if you are a picky eater then Dominican is best for you. Cuba, is however a LOT safer. I always bring my old clothes for the locals, and in the Dominican I felt like I was being attacked by them for my stuff. It was pretty scary. I also had my bike stolen when I rode into a village. Neither happened in Cuba in all my 10 trips. Cuban resorts are not as spectacular as Dominican resorts though. If your looking for a luxury vacation for the resort lifestyle, then I would go for Dominican but other than that, Cuba is the PERFECT vacation destination.

I have been to the Dominican Republic various times and Cuba once. I MUCH prefer the Dominican Republic. My favourite place there is Puerto Plata.
I found Cuba extremely boring, with hardly anything to do - and then the resorts were rubbish compared to DR resorts.

The resorts in DR are fantastic, the people there can't do enough for you and if you do decide you want to do excursions there are tonnes to choose from. I advise you go 'fire blading' (horse back riding - cowboy style) or to swim with dolphins. They are amazing experiences, experiences I will remember always. Possibly the best times of my life.

The food, people, beaches etc are all fantastic. Yes, the people if you leave the resorts may beg occasionally and try to sell you things BUT it is a third world country - what do you expect? They are poor and assume you are rich, anyone would do the same in their situation. It can sometimes be intimidating if you go out closer to the slums but if you stick to you're resort or touristy places (unless with tour guides on excursions etc) and do not flash you're gadgets, money, jewellery etc around - you will be fine. Just use you're common sense and it'll take you along way.

I recommend Puerto Plata.. it has some of the best resorts and beaches within the DR. Its a fantastic place with abolsutely tonnes to see - it'll have you going back for more, no problem!!

Although there is lots to do in both countries, both have great beaches and interesting history, Cuba to me is a far better choice mainly because it is much safer.

I just got back from Cuba and had a great time. It was my second time going. But honestly it's where you want to go. I've never been to the Dominican so I wouldn't know anything about it. But what I do know is that they're both sunny and warm! :)

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!!!!
I have been there and it is amazing!!!!!! DON'T FEED THE COMMUNIST COUNTRY YOUR MONEY! I am cuban and I still have family in Cuba and been 3 times, to the poor area and not the tourist side. Dont give money to fidel castros regime of arrogance!

both islads have great weather but cuba still has sanctions so sometimes it is difficult to get certain foods and items. dom rep however doesnt have sanctions so you will be able to buy more goods and the food will be better due to more availability.standard of the islands are very similar both have some very good hotels .

Both are interesting, I personally prefer DR.

Sometimes I had issues in Cuba with the almost apartied like situation where Cubans are second class citizens in their own country. Cuba is good for tourists not for Cubans.

I think visiting Cuba was a good experience, just not in a big hurry to go back.

Dominican Republic (Beautiful Place) I haven'tbeen to dom.rep but I had the worst time in Cuba because:

1. Lots of irrritating fish sellers
2, overpopulated,
3. high crime rate,
4. pollution,
5. power shortage in some places)

Just because they don't have communism or a mummy with a long beard that will suck your money to make himself richer and the country worse.

I have been to both and my recommendation to you is to do both. They are both fantastic countries, each with a lot of different things to offer.

What I liked the most about the Dominican Republic is how close to a complete anarchy it is. You will see four people riding a motorcycle there, you will see 11 year old kids drinking beer on the street, you will see a 50 year old getting down at it with a 15 year old, you will see cars completely disregarding the traffic lights and plowing through the intersection on the red – Dominican republic is just completely different from anything you have seen and it’s worth the visit. Plus nature is just plain beautiful with lots to offer regardless what it is you are into.

Cuba on the other hand is like a step back in time. Old Al Capone era cruisers, nightlife like you have never seen before, extremely, ridiculously nice people, safe beyond words (young single woman can walk the darkest streets all alone in the middle of the night and not only will she not be touched, there won’t even be as much as shouting at her or making any form of approach, whether physical or verbal). Most of Cuban nature is pristine, unspoiled by human infrastructure, beaches are beautiful with dust like softness on the feet, colonial architecture will take you back centuries by just walking the streets… it’s an extraordinary experience.

Don’t limit yourself to just one experience. Both countries have a lot to offer and you won’t be disappointed either way. Definitely experience both and then be your own judge for yourself. Nobody knows what strums your string better than you. Once you have visited both countries, you will know yourself which one is the right one for you.

Enjoy a wonderful time in the Caribbean :)
