Do I Need To Pass Thru Customs When Taveling 2 US Virgin Islands?

I am a U.S. Citizen and have a passsport and know that this will suffice to get me back on the plane. But the question is not related to travel DOCUMENTS but whether I will physically have to go thru customs like a non US citizen, either in the V.I. or when I return back to the U.S.??

No it's a US territory.

No, you do not have to pass through customs. As long as you have your ID you are good to go. The only time they do stop you is if you bring fruits, the fruits have to be frozen and double rapped in foil. The Virgin Islands is part of the United States. Everyone basically know each other because it is very small. I should know I was born and raised in St. Croix U.S.V.I.

roast_breadfruit
Yeah, we know its a US territory, but you still have to pass through customs. When you get to immigration it is straight through though.

Stacy
you need your passport only as a form of ID, it probably won't get stamped or anything.. because they won't take just a drivers license or anything anymore, its a new law from bush and the dept. of homeland security.

mrewak has it right.....as far as Customs is concerned YES YES YES You DO go through Customs traveling FROM the VI to the mainland or Puerto Rico. ( but not from the mainland or PR to the VI) .
The reason is, that, even though we are part of the USA and Americans do NOT need a passport to travel to or from here ( Immigration) the VI is considered 'outside' the US CUSTOMS zone. This was one of the parts of the purchase of the VI from Denmark in 1914, and the reason cigarettes, liquor jewelry watches et al are so unbelievably cheap here compared to the mainland.

An American gets I think, $700 dollars and 6 cartons of cigarettes ( at 14.00 a carton!) duty free through customs and really low duty on the balance..so keep your receipts, don't bring anything weird in your bags and its straight through. A note: In high season it can take an hour or more to get through, so really truly show up 2 hours ahead at the ST Thomas airport

MRewak
Put it this way. At the airport in St. Thomas EVERYBODY must go through US customs before boarding their flights, regardless of your final destination. You can't get into the terminal without going through customs. It's usually quick and easy. You just show your passport or birth certificate/driver's liscence combo and declare any items such as liquor/jewelry/tobacco and proceed through security and board your flight.
