To be 100 percent truthful, there are places in the Caribbean you can go without a passport. But if you want to go back into the US, you will need your passport. Because the US govenment passed a law requiring you as a US Citizen, to have a passport to get back into the US.

Hope that helps and clarifies.

africanviolet
YES, if you are flying to Caribbean countries outside the US.

NO, if you are going by ship or are visiting Caribbean islands that are part of the US (ie Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands)

By Jan, 2008 you will need a passport to travel anywhere outside of the US, whether by air, land or sea.

Check out the link below to get the details and to get the forms and instructions on how to apply for a passport.

crooky
if you are flying yes,but if for example you drive to or live in Florida and you take a cruise to the Caribbean from there then no.

Yes you do. It is outside the continental US and is made up of islands belonging to Britain and Holland, in addition to our own presence, but it is out of the CONUS (Continental US) area.

shamrock70
Yes. Go to the tourist site of the country you are visiting and they will give you all the document requirements for you to travel.

africanviolet is the only one who has it right, including the important link to the State Department......

by ship, no not untill Jan 08

by plane yes

EXCEPT

you will never, not now, not then, need a passport to travel to the US Virgin Islands or Puerto RIco because they are American Territories

You need a Passport for re-entry back into the US if flying. If on a cruise ship, no, you need a State certified copy of your birth certificate.

After January 07 re-entry back into the US from a foreign country by air or land requires a Passport. After January 08 re-entry back into the US by sea (cruise ship) you will be required to have a Passport. Until January 08, if by sea (cruise) you can use State certified copy of your birth certificate as proof of citizenship.

I take it you are talking about flying there and back, so the answer is yes, it is required. And actually you won't be able to board the plane here (with your intinerary showing a return flight) without showing you have a Passport to meet the travel requirements, so it's not like you can "take your chances" coming back in.

Kalona
Yes, now you need a passport to travel from the US to the Carribean. (I believe the new passport law went into effect as of 1/12/07). The new law also requires a passport when you travel to Canada and Mexico. This new law has increased the volume of passport applications, so it may take a little longer to get a passport. Good luck!
