Yes

One of the following documents should be presented to prove both identity and citizenship.

U.S. or Canadian Passport
U.S. Passport Card (Available spring 2008)*
Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)*
State or Provincial Issued Enhanced Driver’s License (when available – this secure driver’s license will denote identity and citizenship.)*
Enhanced Tribal Cards (when available)*
U.S. Military Identification with Military Travel Orders
U.S. Merchant Mariner Document
Native American Tribal Photo Identification Card
Form I-872 American Indian Card
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) Card

When I applied for my passport it took 3 weeks, but they will tell you it will be anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks so you will
need to make sure your time allotment is adequate in order to receive your passport in time for your trip.

Passports are not needed for sea travel until June 1, 2009. Right now, you need a birth certificate and photo I.D. Some cruise lines like all passengers to have passports so it is wise to call them and ask their policy. If you do need or want to get a passport, others gave you the correct info and website for info.

First of all, it doesn't take 4 months to get one. You can expedite your processing.

You can down load the forms from the web, but since this is your first passport you must apply in person. Here is a link.

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html

The government website says you don't need a passport to cruise but most cruise lines are requiring a passport now. Best to get your passport, you never know, you may win a trip with airfare to the Caribbean in the future.

Good Luck)

Not if you travel there exclusively by sea.

More info:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_989.html

However, note that it's more like four weeks, rather than four months, to get your passport. From the State Department website:

At this time, we are processing routine applications in less than four weeks from the time of application. We are processing requests for expedited service in two weeks door-to-door*.
