Not unless you are going to be out of the tourist zones close to the Haitian border. Denge is what I have heard about lately. |

Not in the time I was there. Lived there for 12 years, came back to the States every summer and never had to get vaccinated for Malaria. |

It is advised if you are spending time in rural areas or in the Punta Cana resort area. |

I do not believe that you will need any but if you are not comfortable then just go right ahead. I went there and did not use any. |

If you are going to be spending a lot of time in the rural areas, campos, then it is advised that you take cholorquine tablets. If you are just going for vacation or to the beaches you'll be fine. Just take misquito repellent- they do have dengue fever there. |

i have been to Dominican Republic two times and did not take any thing but if you want to be care why not protect your self ! or if your going to rural areas, jungle areas, very poor area's or farms i would get it then because that is where you are most likely to contract malaria from need water sources and polluted area's |

Depends on where you're going. There has been no malaria in Puerto Plata or anywhere on the north coast ever. In general, the closer you are to the border with Haiti, the greater a risk, however according to Canada's Health Department, there are some risks in the Punta Cana/Bavaro area too:

I went to the DR several times and never took any anti-malaria pills (whoever mentioned injection before obviously didn't know that anti malaria vaccination is not injected - there is no vaccine available against malaria, however you can take pills to minimize chances of infection).
The best advice is to consult with your general practitioner. Another option is to take Chloriquine as a precaution - for sheer sake of peace of mind. Chloriquine is cheap, without the coverage, the cost of the pills is only about $13. So considering cost involved buying pills vs. risks involved contracting malaria, one should play it safe and go for the $13. Not sure about the side effects though. You should read up on that so the pills don't spoil your fun on the sun. |

it's advised to get injections if you're going to any warm country just to minimize risk. |
