Do any of the nationalities that visit Cuba actually have any Cuban people/refugees in their own countries?

The US has a strong Cuban-American population and yet Americans are restricted from travel there (families are allowed to visit relatives) due to politics.

How much do other countries know about Cuba and Cubans - or do they just go for the beaches?
Additional Details
It's just that the largest number of Cubans outside of Cuba reside in the US - it seems unfair that they are restricted from seeing their families while people with no connection can go there freely.

I have friends with Cuban family - where my interest stems from

Of course. We Cubans are everywhere

I don't understand the purpose of your statement regarding the Cuban americans and the americans. Exactly what are you saying ?

Sadly, I have seen that people from other countries don't have the foggiest idea of the Cuban real situation

They go for the beaches and to enjoy a good time in our country

Hum, a more friendly attitude towards fidel. Why, may I ask ?

fidel is no choir boy. He doesn't deserve any especial treatment more than Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Osama bin Laden or Jack the Ripper

I thank all the other participants for their contributions, but I have the feeling that if we wish to go back or not to OUR country, that is our decision.
If somebody else finds it logical or ilogical, I think they should take care of their own countries instead of ours
Just my opinion

The Netherlands have about 900 Cubans living here ...
The Dutch, I think 25% do have an idea what Cuba is about, the other 75% just go to enjoy their beaches or travel Cuba by bus or rental car

They do. Canadians visit Cuba and I understand that they have Cubans there. Not many, I think
Other people like Spain also have Cubans. We have become the Wandering Jews of the XX and XXI centuries. There are Cubans everywhere

What is your point about the USA Cuban population and the yanks being restricted from travel there ? You are not clear about this

Other countries know NOTHING about Cuba and Cubans and they don't care. As you say, they go for the beaches

Despite being Cuba ruled by a terrible ruthless and cruel dictator many people don't care. Some people even boast of being friends of big bad fidel

There is no excuse to support a dictator, at least, not from countries that are supposedly democratic

I am not sure that Obama knows how to deal with a crook like bad old fidel. Let's hope for the best and prepare for the worst

Victor
I suppose so. We are in many countries

We know that.

Concerning the second question, I think that they don't know anything

What is unfair is the existence of a cruel, ruthless, perverse dictator in our country for the last 50 years. THAT IS UNFAIR !

We Cubans can decide by ourselves what is logical and what is not, concerning our country.

No need for people from other countries to decide that for us.

Thanks but no thanks

In many countries you can find Cubans.

Please, allow me a little minor commentary. I see many people here bad mouthing and criticizing the USA for this or that, but I have never seen any critics about fidel and his merry men

I find the explanation about Canada very enlightening, but there are some aspects about which I would beg to differ

Right, it is a totally hypocritical position that of theUSA of wet feet/dry feet.

I agree and as I can see, Canada does not turn any Cubans away, but to get a visa is harder than winning the lotto.

I can see that Canada is known to take more refugees than the USA and they are given asylum and protection. That is good. I am glad for that,

but, there is a little bit of a problem

Above it says that Canada does not automatically grant refugee status to those who flee from fidel's regime. They must prove that their lives are in risk if they stay

That makes things not exactly easy for cubans. That is the catch

They have. Since fidel seized power in Cuba, we have had to escape.

I think that 99% go for the beaches, but they don't care about the conditions in Cuba, plain and simple.

Hum. The majority of the world is aware of what is going on in Cuba.
How sad. Therefore, the obvious conclusion is that they don't care

Canada is the country that accepts more refugees, but does not grant refugee status to those who escape from fidel's regime. They have to prove that their lives are at risk if they stay there.
I wonder how can we prove that.

Canada does not allow Cubans to have public manifestations against fidel. It is not legal for Cubans to do so.
Very interesting

And they give me thumbs down. Oh, well. There are people for everything

I have the bad feeling that other countries know nothing about Cuba and Cubans, and care even less

Beardo
Yes - there are Cubans in most countries. I was even surprised to learn that there is a Cuban community in Norway. Lots of Cubans return to Spain - the home of their ancestors. And there are quite a number in Italy, too.

I suspect that most countries know more about Cuba than the average US citizens.

Regarding refugees, the way that Canada treats Cubans is the same as they treat anybody else claiming refugee status.

What is less logical is the idea that Cubans get special treatment in the US, because of the persecution in Cuba, and the first thing many of them do once they get US residency, is plan their first trip back.

Yes, actually just about all of the countries represented through tourism in Cuba have Cuban people/refugees in their own countries.

Most people are aware of Cuba and the Cuban people, the living conditions, etc...not all go for the beaches. But you will always find those who don't really understand the full capacity of their situation. Yet, those can also be the same people who SHOULD know better and should be educated properly but seem to think that all Canadians actually live in igloos all year round. I use this illustration because even in something as minute as that, many are ignorant of the reality. And this is coming from people who are 'south of the border' of Canada. So if those kinds of people (and they do exist) only see one-dimensional and only know what's happening in their own little world, then of course many won't see the bigger picture.

That said, the majority of the world is aware of what is going on in Cuba and are not all about 'selfishness'.

"Cuba and Canada have good relations. This country has full diplomatic and trades relations with Cuba and does not automatically grand refugee status to people who flee Castro’s regime. They have to demonstrate that their lives are in risk if they stay there.

Canadian laws do not accept the US embargo and they do not agree when the US judges someone because they have business with Cuban enterprises (Welch, 2002).

Canada is a multicultural country. Almost every ethnicity must be in the country somewhere. If you look, you can people from all over the world. And since Canada is the country that accepts more refugees, is more likely to find lots of those type of people.

There are, approximately, 12,000 Cubans in Canada
(now there would be more), and the government of the country is welcoming others that want to go there. “Recently Canada and the US signed an agreement that will allow the US to send 200 refugees, Cubans and Haitians, per year to Canada” (Bourie, 1996). These refugees are held in Guantanamo Bay and even if they had not demonstrated the desire to live in this country, Canada is willing to accept them and help them in the exile journey.

Cubans that migrate to Canada have almost the same expectations of their compatriots who went to other countries. They go because they are seeking better opportunities for their families, some are pursuing their education, others are looking for employment opportunities and some of them come to this country to join their families (Campsie, n.d).

Many of them are political refugees, but in Canada there are not public movements against Castro’s government in this country, Canada’s government does not allow Cubans to have public manifestations against Castro (or any others as well); it is not legal for Cubans to do so.

As refugees, Canada gives them $600 dollars every month (would be more now) to pay for rent and basic needs such as food, clothes and doctors (Knox, 1998). They get the chance to work in jobs, and they have free English classes for one year.

The Cuban community in this country is big; they have good relations in between, so they can keep their culture."
http://www.hamline.edu/cla/academics/international_studies/diaspora2002/Cubans/Paper.htm#_Toc29121795

Other countries in the world such as Germany, Switzerland, US, Italy, Mexico, France, Venezuela, the UK, Argentina and so many others have many Cubans living there as well.

*edit: the US and every other country does the same for anyone who comes to claim refugee status. Even though it is legitimate, legally that is how all countries work. But Canada is known to take people in MORE than the US and they are given asylum and protection....
Whoever reads this quote that deals with statistics should not take things out of context. If anyone wants to take things out of context, then one can also feel that Cubans are not always safe as they try to swim across to the US but can be sent back by the US coastguard...such asylum there...hmnnn.
Canada doesn't turn Cubans away.

Canada has had a long standing relationship with Cuba it involves much more than tourism Below are several links should you wish to check them out. Hopefully with the election of Obama the U. S. will pursue a more friendly attitude towards Cuba.
