This is what is stated on American Airways.
Identification Requirements
Passengers 18 years of age or older are required to have government-issued photo identification for travel within the United States. However, you may be required to present proof of age (such as a birth certificate) at the airport for any children under the age of 18 who are traveling with you.
So for an adult you need a government issued photo ID, such as a driving licence. You do not need a passport as other have mentioned (unless you plan to travel from Puerto rico to another country or take a cruise that will dock at another country. Or you are not a US citizen or permanent resident).
As the aa.com section states 'you may be require...' Therefore if I was you I would bring the birth certificates with you. better to be safe than sorry.
If all these mixed answers don't make you feel safe about what to take, contact your airline or the US Department of State for answers.
Enjoy your trip here. |

No it is not a state. teritory and it does not have all the same rights as the states but nearly.
You should have a passport for everyone when traverling out of the USA. You do not need it in some places but it is a very good thing to have if you ever get into any trouble. That includes babies as well. |

Over the summer I went on a cruise to Puerto Rico with my mom and we had to bring a passport with us. It didn't get stamped or anything, probably just as a from of i.d. because it has my picture in it. |

Nope. No papers what so ever. They are free to come and go. Porto Rico is a U.S. State. Remember they vote in all elections and serve in our military. Which is why other Latin countries consider them un loyal. They refused to fight in the Mexican revolution and rolled out the red carpet to Theodore Roosevelt. Which is why they have all the benefits that all American citizens enjoy. |
